Most Common Cause of Heart Attacks

"Mental stress" that you may not even know is there is a stronger indicator of heart attack or other severe heart event than other known risk factors including smoking, having high cholesterol or diabetes or being a man.

According to researchers, people whose blood pressure rose during periods of "mental stress" were six times more likely to have a coronary heart disease event within six years than those who remained calm under the stress.

The study participants typically did not realize when the stress was taking a toll. There was no correlation between actual mental stress and the participants' perceptions of it.

Researchers concluded that "conscious stress and biological stress may be two different things," and hope to someday develop a blood test that could warn those at risk.

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:

I frequently ask in my lectures, "What is the most common symptom of heart disease?" Very few are able to answer correctly. Most guess chest pain or shortness of breath, but the actual answer is sudden death.

While fish oil and cod liver oil are one of the best ways to prevent heart disease and sudden death, there are other factors that may be more significant. As the study suggests, stress can certainly take its toll. Unresolved emotional conflicts resulting from stresses in our lives are clearly one of the most important causes of cancer. However, new evidence also supports the notion that bioelectrical short-circuiting resulting from unresolved emotional stress may also be the single largest reason why people die from heart attacks.

While the study suggests that people may not even be aware that they are under "mental stress," there are certainly some indications of stress that can be felt. If you are struggling with unresolved emotions stemming from trauma, relationship problems with friends, family or your spouse, work-related stress or any other stressful event, then you should seek help before these negative emotions and stress take their toll on your health.

One of the best ways to overcome unresolved emotional challenges is by using EFT, a psychological acupressure technique. EFT can help you to channel your stress-related thoughts and leave you feeling calmer and more able to face your challenges. For in-depth instruction on the EFT technique you can view my EFT Series on DVD or VHS.

Through extensive research I have found another tool to use in the area of stress management that is a remarkably effective and efficient (and very affordable) way to help you achieve inner peace and significantly reduce stress and anxiety.

The Insight audio CD, which I personally listen to and now recommend to my patients, is an exceptional tool to help you target the daily stresses in your life that act as prime contributors to all forms of diseases.
