As you likely know, sound can be very irritating, unpleasant and
even stressful (think traffic or construction noise). But just as
easily, sound can have the opposite effect--it can be relaxing,
enjoyable and even healing.
Among the most popular types of sound used to promote health are
white noise, nature sounds and music, but other sounds, such as
church organs, can also bring about physical and mental changes.
White noise, which includes both high and low sounds frequencies,
is particularly popular for people who have trouble sleeping or
concentrating because it can cancel out other sounds. White noise
sounds a lot like blowing wind, falling rain or waves crashing against
a shore and is naturally soothing and relaxing.
People who are faced with noise pollution, such as a snoring spouse
or noisy office, often find that white noise effectively blocks
out undesired sounds so that they can sleep or become more productive.
White noise is also known to be helpful in calming crying babies
or soothing babies with colic.
Nature sounds such as birds, rainstorms, frogs or ocean waves,
and various types of music, such as classical, are often used as
a stress-relief tool. The sounds have a calming effect and can help
patients to relax while undergoing medical procedures. Natural sounds
and music have also been found to ease pain and reduce stress and
anxiety while acting as mood enhancers.
One exceptional tool to help you dramatically reduce the stress
that is a prime contributor to all forms of disease while maximizing
your awareness and potential for growth is the Insight
audio CD, which I personally listen to and now recommend to
my patients. Layered beneath the soothing sounds of natural rain,
this audio CD will help you achieve dramatically powerful states
of consciousness.
Even sounds that are largely inaudible to the human ear, such as
the infrasound released from some church organ pipes, can cause
changes in humans. According to a recent
study, infrasound from church organs instilled feelings of extreme
sorrow, coldness, anxiety and even shivers down the spine among
churchgoers. Researchers say the infrasound may explain why some
people experience feelings of spirituality while at church.
The sound that works best for you will be the one you are naturally
drawn to. If you find the static sound of white noise appealing,
then you may benefit from a white noise machine or CD. On the other
hand, if the sound of ocean waves or falling rain is more soothing
to you, then consider a nature CD or, for even deeper and lasting
effects, the Insight audio CD.
