McDonald’s Corporation announced they would be offering bunless
versions of their hamburgers and chicken sandwiches to keep up with
its low-carbohydrate competitors. In some McDonald’s restaurants
customers have the choice of getting their hamburgers wrapped in
lettuce as opposed to on a bun. In recognition that bunless is more
than a passing fad, McDonald’s has decided to offer the burger
patties on a bed of lettuce in a small salad bowl accompanied with
a knife and fork as an option.
Although McDonald’s doesn’t have plans to advertise the
bunless option, it will be noted in restaurant brochures.
Some of the other bunless competitors include Burger King, Hardees
and Carl’s Jr.
McDonald’s has also launched a health campaign targeting adults
with adult "Happy Meals" that come with a salad, bottled
water and a pedometer. The meals, called "Go Active,"
will be packaged with a brochure encouraging customers to walk more.
After having been the center of an obesity suit and criticized
for its fatty foods by nutrition experts, McDonald’s has sought
to appeal to customers’ desires for healthier foods.
Some experts believe that the McDonald’s campaign benefits
their public relations more than it does consumers’ health.
On the other hand, McDonald’s claims their new advertisements
will promote healthy lifestyles and encourage people to lose weight
by engaging in physical activity.
McDonald’s also announced their plan to offer alternatives
to French fries such as peeled apple slices with low-fat caramel
dipping sauce in children’s "Happy Meals."
