McDonald's Launches 'Adult Happy Meals' and Bunless Burgers

McDonald’s Corporation announced they would be offering bunless versions of their hamburgers and chicken sandwiches to keep up with its low-carbohydrate competitors. In some McDonald’s restaurants customers have the choice of getting their hamburgers wrapped in lettuce as opposed to on a bun. In recognition that bunless is more than a passing fad, McDonald’s has decided to offer the burger patties on a bed of lettuce in a small salad bowl accompanied with a knife and fork as an option.

Although McDonald’s doesn’t have plans to advertise the bunless option, it will be noted in restaurant brochures.

Some of the other bunless competitors include Burger King, Hardees and Carl’s Jr.

McDonald’s has also launched a health campaign targeting adults with adult "Happy Meals" that come with a salad, bottled water and a pedometer. The meals, called "Go Active," will be packaged with a brochure encouraging customers to walk more.

After having been the center of an obesity suit and criticized for its fatty foods by nutrition experts, McDonald’s has sought to appeal to customers’ desires for healthier foods.

Some experts believe that the McDonald’s campaign benefits their public relations more than it does consumers’ health. On the other hand, McDonald’s claims their new advertisements will promote healthy lifestyles and encourage people to lose weight by engaging in physical activity.

McDonald’s also announced their plan to offer alternatives to French fries such as peeled apple slices with low-fat caramel dipping sauce in children’s "Happy Meals."

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:

I don't believe the challenge is to get rid of McDonald's, but instead to change the way Americans respond to food.

If consumers don't buy junk food there will be no market for it, and McDonald's will respond and offer what the market demands--and this latest menu change is a great example of this.

If you are interested in reading more about why fast-food chains like McDonald’s are significant contributors to worldwide poor health I highly recommend the book Fast Food Nation. In this book you will find compelling insight on how under-trained and unpromotable the work force in the fast food industry is and how the widespread corporate conformity discourages the very individualism that brought these giants their initial success.

The key to winning the battle against toxic fast food restaurants is not visiting them. With today’s fast-paced society, this can be a difficult task for busy families, however there are some healthy solutions for the families on the go.

One such solution is Living Fuel Rx, a completely nutritious convenience food, and is a great option when you are pressed for time. Living Fuel Rx provides concentrated sources of vitamins, minerals, proteins, essential fats and enzymes in a convenient powder form.

Although whole foods are best, if you didn’t have time to prepare your own food and find yourself reaching for fast food, consider Living Fuel Rx instead.

As is the case with many people, I have very little free time. However, I prepare over 95 percent of my meals myself in order to preserve my health. It is a commitment, but it can be done. Although fast foods may appear to be the attractive alternative because they are affordable, it will cost you far, far more in the long run.
