The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has
stated that several states no longer have widespread outbreaks
of the flu, but 38 other states still do, which was down from
42 states last month. According to a survey, fewer people
are visiting the doctor for flu-like illnesses--about 8.8
percent of all outpatient visits in the end of December involved
flu-like illnesses, compared with 6.2 percent in early January.
According to the CDC, the U.S. flu season started off unusually
early. So far this season, 55 children have died from the
flu, about half of them under the age of five. About 92 children
who are under the age of five typically die each year from
the flu.
Health officials warn that a second wave of the flu could
occur in some areas, as the flu season typically peaks between
December and February.
