The Best Essential Oils for Croup

Marjoram oil

Story at-a-glance -

  • These three essential oils are some of the most potent ways to help alleviate the croup symptoms
  • Don’t forget to dilute the following oils with a carrier oil, and always consult a physician prior to use, especially if using these for very young children

Apart from herbs and plants, you can also use essential oils to help minimize croup’s painful effects. Prior to usage, consult a physician or health expert first, and do a skin patch test to see if you have sensitivities that may affect the outcome of the treatment.

These Essential Oils Can Target Coughing and Breathing Difficulties

Croup patients usually develop a loud barking cough, noisy or labored breathing, hoarse voice and fever.1 These three essential oils are some of the most potent ways to help alleviate the croup symptoms mentioned. However, remember to dilute them first in an organic carrier oil like coconut, sweet almond, jojoba or olive oil:2,3,4

Wintergreen oil: This essential oil has antiviral, antianalgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, and may be added to hot water, inhaled by the patient or massaged on the upper throat and chest. If using externally, follow the prescribed amount to prevent irritation and burning in the area.

Take note that wintergreen oil is highly toxic5 even in small amounts because it has a heavy concentration of a substance called methyl salicylate. As such, it should be used in moderation, never ingested orally (even if the product was already diluted) and must be kept out of children’s reach, since there is a high possibility that a child who ingests it will have severe poisoning.6

Marjoram oil: Extracted from the marjoram plant’s leaves, this essential oil’s antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial capabilities can work in alleviating croup and helping encourage sleep.7 To use marjoram oil, try spraying it inside the room of a child so he or she can inhale it, or rub it onto a child’s throat, chest or foot.

Lavender oil:8 Children who have croup may have breathing difficulties.9 Because lavender oil is known to be soothing and calming, it can help children sleep easier and assist with alleviating coughs and colds.10 To use lavender oil, rub it onto a child’s back, chest or the soles of the feet.11

These other essential oils can also be used to treat croup and/or induce sleep in children. Just like the three oils mentioned, don’t forget to dilute the following oils with a carrier oil, and always consult a physician prior to use, especially if using them for very young children:12,13
