The Different Types of Genital Warts You Can Get

The appearance of genital warts is consistent. Typically, they may cluster in groups of three or four, have a flesh or grayish color and usually have a rough texture that looks like a cauliflower.

The difference is that they can appear in different places in your body aside from your genitals, which is what the different types of warts are named after.1

HPV Genital Warts in Men and Women

Genital warts can appear in both men and women and are mainly caused by HPV types 6 and 11. In men, they can appear in the:2

Penis

Scrotum

Groin area

Upper thigh area

Inside or around the anus

Inside the urethra

Meanwhile, genital warts in women typically appear in areas, such as:3

Inside or outside the vagina

Inside the cervix

Inside or around the anus

Upper thigh area

Inside the urethra

In addition, women may experience other symptoms such as vaginal bleeding if a wart becomes irritated. Itching and pain may develop as well.4

Warts That Can Appear in Other Areas of the Body

The virus that causes genital warts is not strictly confined to the genitals. Since it feeds on skin cells, warts can develop in other areas, leading to other types such as:

Flat warts: They appear as flat and small growths, and are not typically itchy. Their colors are usually white, beige or brown and mainly develop on the face, neck, chest, forearms, wrists or hands.5 This type is more common in children and teenagers than adults.

Plantar warts: This type looks like flesh-colored or light brown lumps with clotted blood vessels.6 They appear on the soles of your feet and can be mistaken for calluses.7

Your Immune System Is Key Against HPV Infection

Genital warts can be treated with a variety of procedures, such as cryotherapy, laser technology or through surgery.8 However, these are only temporary fixes, because there’s a high chance that some of the virus has remained on your skin even after the warts have been removed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that those who developed genital warts before have a high chance of getting them again three months after treatment.9

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), there is no available cure for HPV itself,10 but your immune system can eliminate it within a span of two years.11 With this in mind, you should do your best to improve your immune system through a proper diet. The best foods you can eat are:12

Citrus fruits: Grapefruits, oranges and lemons contain plenty of vitamin C, which is important for boosting your immune system. Vitamin C also helps increase your white blood cells that protect your body from foreign microbes.

Red bell peppers: Red bell peppers are a rich source of vitamin C and beta-carotene. Like vitamin C, beta-carotene helps your immune system, along with promoting healthy skin — essential against HPV.

Garlic: This vegetable produces a sulfuric compound called allicin that contains various antimicrobial properties. In addition, garlic contains various anticancer compounds, which may help ward off HPV-related cancers.
