To keep "them " from sucking us dry, perhaps we could be more self sufficient...... own gardens, own food supply... It is in society's best interest for you to seek (honestly and ethically) your own best interest. (some) Successful people are philanthropic, not only for the tax benefits, it also serves their self interest. The lord of the manor gives alms to the local poor not only to help the poor, but to gain their loyalty and respect and to keep them from stealing for food. It would be wonderful if people gave to others for more honorable reasons, but most are not so selfless or so spiritual. People act in their own interest and that still usually serves the greater good. Unfortunately there will always be poor people. Some are poor because of lack of opportunity. Some because of lack of intelligence or a severe disability. Some it is laziness. Some it is corruption of the person (addictions and extrreme behaviours). Some it is deep depression and having given up. For some it is a temporary circumstance. Others it has been taken from them. We owe some assistance as a society to some of these for a long term, to some for a temporary term. Some will never appreciate the help and will not use that assistance to pull themselves back into society where they will be productive. We can not help all with every whim, but we can probably at least provide sustenance (basic) to most. That poverty is a fact is unavoidable. As long as there are people, there will be some poverty because as they say, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink. It is not reasonable to expend all the resources of the producers to sustain the non-producers. That will cause the producers to lose motivation to produce, then the problem is compounded. We must have compassion. Do daily an act of kindness or many acts, but maintain the production that allows you to extend that kindness. Be fruitful and multiply. Be productive and grow. Do not try to change the nature of the human. It is impossible. People will give to the extent that they can without drying up their own well.We can try to limit our own hedonistic spending so that we have more to offer. Remember, however that some people must maintain certain ways in order to stay in business so that they can be productive. Sometimes what seems a luxury is simply a tool . If you drive a broken down car to an appointment to counsel people on financial investment, they will scoff. If you drive a nice newer car, especially a special car, they will normally have more respect and more confidence. That does not mean they are right, but it is normal for people to make assumptions like that. You must maintain the means to your production in order to be able to continue. Not much more can be expected unless we resort to slavery. In modern times, when government tries to control the very food we grow with our own hands, the way we work, licenses for every activity, the reward that we earn for our labor and the tax we must pay them for the privilege of ordering us around, we are virtually slaves. If we want freedom, we must go back to the intent of the constitution which tried to keep government small and out of our business. Government was to be the servant of the people to defend the whole from foreign threats and establish a few rules to keep the politicians straight. It was not meant to be the know it all body it has come to be.It was not meant to be Robin Hood. We tried to play God by allowing contraception and abortion. Now we are in a situation where our culture is close to becoming wiped out. With fewer people, we have fewer to join forces to protect us. If you are bright and productive, breed, baby, breed. o
