About Me
Hi, I'm 59 years young with a wife and 14 year-old daughter. I've been interested in health since I took a nutrition course in college at UT Austin in 1973 (went on to BS Engineering Science 1974, MS Engineering 1979). How things have changed since then! I followed the latest health advice from Prevention magazine in the 1980's but it wasn't until December 2005 upon searching for info on the internet about floaters in the eyes that I discovered alternative health web sites like Dr Mercola's, Weston A Price Foundation, The Omnivore, Second Opinions, and Cholesterol and Health, as well as others like the Life Extension Foundation (some good scientific info but way too much emphasis on supplements). My appetite for health information has been insatiable ever since. Unfortunately, I'm finding that the science behind health and nutrition is extremely complicated. I do believe that proper unbiased science is the best way to find the real answers. Too bad there is so much shoddy and profit-driven biased health "science" these days. I have lost my faith in our medical establishment that relies heavily on band-aid drug fixes and surgery that are unnecessary most of the time. I like what Barry Groves, PhD (Second Opinions) has to say about practicing medicine: "When an ailment is treated successfully, by whatever means, that success may be for one of three reasons. The first is that the cure is a direct result of the treatment, as in the case of a bacterium killed by an antibiotic. The second is that the disease is what is known as self-limiting – in other words, the natural healing power of the body will clear it up eventually whether it is treated or not, as in the case of a cold. The third is where a substance that has no curative powers is given but, because the patient believes it is a curative treatment, he gets well. This is called the placebo effect." We have to be very careful to determine whether it was actually the treatment that cured the problem before supporting the treatment. We also need to look for and treat the root causes of problems. This is often much more difficult but necessary to really cure the problem and not just treat the symptoms. In many cases, treating the symptoms may only make the real problem worse. Careful science with independent confirmation is the best method to make these determinations. Good luck in your quest for health.
Stay healthy! Enjoy life!
