I am new to organics and living the simple life. After being sick most of my life, simple things as well as chronic conditions, I became seriously ill in February 2008. My doctor of 10 years couldn't figure out what was wrong with me and so dumped me. I found a new doctor/clinic, and then, dissatisfied with how my old doctor treated me and how I kept getting sicker year after year, I asked my new doctor/Internist for a referral to an alternative doctor. Not that I didn't want to see her; I need a PCP for my insurance company--but I wanted another set of opinions and expertise. She introduced me to a medical doctor who specializes in Function and Integration Medicine. It took me one visit with her and one test and we knew a place to start: Heavy Metal Toxicity. What a shock to discover that my illnesses are because of my body's inability to naturally detoxify itself (confirmed with a genetics test called CYP2C9)!! I was toxic in Mercury, Lead, Barium, Thallium, Niobium, Platinum, and Arsenic and halfway to being toxic in Antimony, Aluminum, and Rubidium. I did three months of (body organ) detoxing and two months of toxin detoxing. It is a long, slow, and laborious procedure. Once complete, I will need to learn what to do so that I can detox my body on a daily basis. My daughter was also be tested for heavy metals and found to have even higher amounts in some metals than I was; she chelated three times. She's had many medical problems herself and also has the CYP2C9 Cytochrome P450 genetic program as well. The Integration Doctor also tested me and discovered that I have a severe casein allergy (cow's milk/products), a severe soy and gliadin/gluten intolerance, and various other food intolerances.
Being "dropped" by my doctor really opened my eyes to the conventional healthcare system. My husband and I were totally shocked that a person could be dropped, just like that, without any type of sit down meeting/discussion. Especially when a person is as ill as I was. One would think that would be an ethics violation. Now, I find it a blessing in disguise, because it forced me to take control of my own health and life and not leave it up to a "doctor" who is more interested in retirement and the fact he is a "cardiac specialist" rather than helping me, as my primary care physician, find out what's wrong with me. Through navigating the thousands of info sites on home remedies and other "green" living, I realize what a daunting task it is to sort out the truth from the lies and trying to work around conventional medicine's sneering at alternative medicine.
In Oct 2009 I saw my GYN for my annual checkup and told her that I was still horribly fatigued still two years after having gotten so violently ill. She referred me to a Naturopathic Doctor who specializes in Microbiology. Through testing we discovered that I have adrenal fatigue and that my body was horribly deficient in key detoxification nutrients, as well as other key areas. We have been working to get those "out of alignment" areas remedied.
I find it absolutely amazing how hard it is to try to discuss not only my own problems, but also my daughter's problems with conventional doctors (exercise, nutritionists, pediatricians, specialists) when I bring up something alternative or "out of their learning/comfort" zone. Many times, I have to bite my tongue and remind myself that they are only telling me what they've been told/taught in medical school. And all I can think of is what a shame so many people have to suffer because they won't open their minds to new ideas. I'm so glad I've decided to become brave and have "broken" through the distrust shield dividing alternative from conventional.
