About Me

Hi.  I love to read, and learn new things.  I'm a mother of two disabled children.  I have a form of celiac disease.  I studied psychology, philosophy, science, medicine, architecture, chemistry, anatomy, statistics, computers, and communications in college.  I have been studying Vibrational Medicine, Feng Shui, Yoga, Meditation, nutrition, vitamins, alternative healing methods for the last 20 years.  I have been a strict vegetarian for 15 years, right now I am mostly a pescatarian.

Before I knew I had some form of celiac disease, I used to have Fibromyalgia, IBS, TMJ, and Chronic Fatigue, with many symptoms that got much worse over the years.  After going on a gluten-free, casein-free diet which is recommended for treating Autism with my son, all of my long-standing symptoms went away.  It seems like a miracle.  I was able to get rid of all prescription medications.  I lost 40 pounds.  I love to exercise now.  I go on 15 to 24 mile bike rides weekly.  My photo is from a bike ride on the Fox River a few weeks ago (Aug. 2009) after riding for 22 miles.  Before I used to only be able to do small amounts of moving around and then had to rest.  I would get worse after any type of exercise.

I have focused on wellness for many years of my life, but with dissapointing results until now.  I think that various health claims over the years have misled me and my doctors from figuring out what was really best for my individual health.  The good thing about being sick for many years is that I appreciate good health so much more now, and I am savoring it.  I have also learned a great deal about nutrition and exercise through this experience, which I am using to help others in my care.

Another benefit has been that I have never smoked during my lifetime, and never drank for 45 years.  I now drink an occasional glass of wine and sometimes try other drinks.  I have found that even though I was sick, that avoiding meat, not sitting out in the sun a lot (my generation used to put mineral oil laced with iodine on and sit out all day to get tan)  nicotine, drugs and alcohol has made me look younger than I expected to be at age 50.  I also avoided sugar and caffein for a few years, but now enjoy teas and a single cup of coffee.  I notice that I feel better if I don't drink coffee every day.

Learning yoga and meditation helped me to tune into my body more, and notice what works for me and what doesn't.  I am an intense type of person, so illness slowed me down enough to force me to learn this.  I hope nobody has to go through being ill to take responsibility for their own well-being, and to learn what they can to stay well and be pro-active about their health.

I'm a trained grassroots organizer, and a trained advocate for the disabled, and I am a resource for parents of children with Autism and Spina Bifida.  I also know a lot about cancer, and have done respite, and hospice.

I have seen first-hand the effects of immunizations on children, and the elderly.  I have advocated for children in the area of lead-poisoning and mercury-poisoning prevention.  I have started several grassroots groups, one against air pollution in our city.
