Hi Megan, I'm happy to be your vitamin D friend.  There's nothing that bad about D2, it's just not nearly as bioavailble as D3. It's a little tricky to recommend a dosage especially for kids since everyone is different.  As an example, I take 10,000 IU a day and my 25(OH)D is 55 ng/mL, but my wife takes 5000 IU and her 25(OH)D is 70.  The real objective is a blood level above 50 ng/mL and whatever it takes to get you there is what you need. I would probably give your kids 6000 every day for a week or 2 just to boost them up, and then go on a maintenance dose of 2000 IU.  You could give 6000 every 3 days as you asked.  Get a test in 3 months to see how its working.  Most likely they will need to increase.  For adults I would go with 5000 or 6000 IU daily and get the same test in 3 months. I don't think it matters if you use Mercola's Mist or D3 tablets.  I use 5000 IU capsules from Bio Tech Pharmacal that I get on Amazon.

About me: I am a mechanical engineer who has had an obsession with vitamin D for years. You can read my book reviews on Amazon by finding Sunshine and Vitamin D, and then click to read all my reviews. I have read hundreds of articles including many from medical journals. I attend vitamin D conferences and know many of the researchers personally. I love opening peoples eyes to the great power of vitamin D. I have even given a bottle of D3 as a shower gift to young women getting married and planning to start a family, since they need it more than most.
