linkis, You had one tooth repaired in this manner, and had problems with margin being sharp edged, which I did not have. I had the composite - latest version at the time, done on eight teeth, and the looks were nice, but that is all. I brushed and flossed religiously as soon as I learned about doing the flossing part previously - "Only floss the teeth you want to keep." Now I use a Water Pik, which gets more stuff out right away for me, and gums are obviously healthier from doing that, I would assume. However, the composite pain on temperature change did not go away in six weeks, so I had them changed back again. When some of those started coming apart, I went to another dentist, who told me there were new and better compounds that were stronger and hypoallergenic, and did not have a record of making teeth sensitive, because a liner was installed first, then the composite glued to that. Great looking job - beautiful, but same problem with iced tea or hot coffee. Ouch! Hot food, too, and ice cream? Forget it. Sadder but wiser, I went back and had amalgam put in again, and with the exception of one tooth that I thought should have had a cap, which later broke, I have had no problems with the amalgam that I am aware of, nor with three gold teeth, and a gold onlay - three sides gold, but preserving the inside and between the teeth of the tooth intact. I do have one "test fillling" of composite, to see how rapidly my teeth decay, and that is on a lower eye tooth, but hasn't budged, and it was only supposed to last about 5 years. Also it is NOT that light cured stuff. It appears now that anything added to the mouth's chemistry is subject to problems. That being said, there is productive research in regrowing the tooth with stem cell therapy that does not involve taking the cells from babies. Don't remember the citation for that, but I read it on the net. thanks
