I have my facts straight and simple. I launch into the benefits of coconut oil as a second topic, and unprocessed foods as a third. Most have heard the benefits of raw fruits and vegetables, so it clinches it right there. If they begin asking me more questions, I tell them about raw milk vs pasteurized, dangers of rBST growth hormone in milk ( they now carry the 'rBST-free' kind by a major dairy for only .50cents more), and organic butter vs margerine. They always ask me where to find this info, and I pull out my small notebook and pen and write out Dr Mercola's website for them on the spot! They are so thankful and begin looking in their carts for objectionable items... it's kind of funny. Standing in the check-out line is great also, because my captive audience hears me ask them "Isn't it great Acme now carries more organic items, like ... (hold up item) and (hold up another item). My finish line is usually something like 'You are what you eat', and find something good in their cart to talk about, relating to obesity, diabetes or cancer, because everyone knows someone who has it. I make Colloidal Silver water and pass it out for free with my name and email on it!

I was a preschooler teacher some years ago. I would allow only healthy foods ot be brought in for snacks and I did my best to take advantage of every available means (stories, songs, games, books) to constantly teach the importance of nutrition!! During that same time period I also had day care in my home. I supplied the after school snacks which were again, whole foods, fruits with nut butters and any number of creative combinations.

This was over 25 years ago and I may have been considered a "tree hugger" back then. Now, just 2 days ago, my grown daughter said to me "Mom, all of that you taught me so many years ago is now becoming mainstream"! She was surprised and I, of course, was just pleasantly grateful.

Children learn what they live and live what they learn! The younger healthy food choices become a way of life, the more ingrained it is by those challenging school years with the influence of others who see no cause and effect between what we do and how our bodies react1

Happy Birthday, Adam!! And truly, many more!!

My mother takes 15 medications and is ready to keel over, but she will not listen. Almost as if you are talking to a wall. It is so painful to see when there is a clear solution! I also send articles to my sister and uncle even though I know it annoys them,Im still trying. May God bless you all on this journey.

Ah yes, how greatly we are influenced by our nearest and dearest.

The "pill for every ill" issue came up for me recently. A friend was telling me with pride how her young children would ask for a specific homeopathic remedy for a cut, another for a headache, etc. As tactfully as possible (I'm not known for my tactfulness!), I suggested to her that it might not be the best idea to let her children get used to popping pills of any sort. And the habit of needing to take something every time a small health challenge comes along may not be a healthy one. She reacted strongly to say the least, defending the merits of bringing up her children in a homeopathic household.

No one remedy, drug, food, lifestyle, system has all the answers and health does not come from book or bottle or another person. I believe the most helpful belief I hold is that my body (and human bodies in general) is the most wonderful creation, taking care of 99.99% of my needs with the occasional bit of help. I try to pass this on to my children and those around me while remembering that there is a time for some tender care and attention.

Let's keep positive and give of our knowledge to those around us by example in a light-hearted way.

Cheers, Billy

When she arrives on the friday she is hyper & over active and wont sleep untill way after most of the adults in the house are sleeping.

I try and feed her my diet of organic homemade home grown food, no diet cokes!! or cookies etc etc.

I try and teech her what is good and what is bad..

Then she goes back to her mothers home and passes on this information..

Much to her mothers annoyance..

I then get the phonecalls

How dare I feed her head with crap.. she's a young girl she can eat what she wants, when she wants....

Which consists of friday night pizza hut, 2 or more trips to Mcdonalds, then kfc or burger king etc etc etc

her mother is very over wieght and unfortunatly the little girl is going that way to..

she can eat more than any child ive ever known, but she's a spirtited bright pretty young girl, who'll suffer needlessly because of her diet..

Sometimes I feel like giving up, what difference does 2 days here and there make, but then I think that hopefully some of the knowledge will stick with her..

Or she'll just see me as the wicked step-mother!

Does anyone else have any simular stories....

My eight year old, Emmanuel, sees that I am very avid about health issues and so is he. Just like me, he looks at labels. Everytime he is offered a drink by one of his friends, the first thing he does is look at the label. If it says "high fructose corn syrup", he refuses and says "It has high corn syrup. That's bad for you". His friends listen and are starting to check their labels as well, at least when he is around - LOL! Another thing Emmanuel does is that when someone gets hurts, he immediately asks that I put lavender oil on them. If someone has a migraine headache, he goes and gets the M-grain essential oil and gives it to the person so they can feel better. He knows we don't use drugs anymore in our house and he is very avid at using and recommending the essential oils we use. It's awesome to see how influenced he is by health issues! If he sees an advertisement on TV of sugar-loaded cereals, he says "Mommy - bad for you!". I know he will make good choices as he continues to grow up.

Kids listen and see what we do! Never underestimate the power of good living.

I do not know when you leave for your winter retreat in Hawaii; But, might you consider some traveling so many of us can hear you speak in person?

That is such a great age to teach about health too.

I posted on here a couple of months ago about giving up my nightly glass of wine. I know there are various views on wine, but I do know that it's not a good idea for me. What really did it was the anti-drug talks I have been having with my son, which included excessive alcohol. It didn't take long for him to call me on it. I promised to give it up and, truth be told, I've had a few glasses since. He's called me on that as well "Mama, you said you were not going to drink that ever again!"

More: Alcohol and depression and the lessons we can learn from children.

And as a side note, five is not too young for these anti-drug talks.
