going to the ACS. As I stood there, people were milling around the booth, and the words "It's for a good cause"

were being thrown out, I looked them straight in the eyes and said, "There is already a cure for cancer" and started to walk away. The looks in their eyes told it all! I felt good!!!!

And Bagarino if you can find that article I would be very interested!

I am currently researching the health effects of synthetic chemicals from cosmetics in the beauty industry. This profession is 'swimming in synthetics' and the professionals working in this industry are at long term risk. Not just hairdressers (the most obvious) but beauticians, cosmeticians & makeup artists. I cannot find any stats anywhere. Can anyone help with real stats?? I have tried numerous Govt workplace health & safety to no avail (what a surprise!!) I've tried Safe cosmetics but never hear back from them. I have googled every known word relating to dangers in this profession and still can't find concrete stats. I also want to know how many left the industry from work related illness and where are they now!

People working in the industry are largley ignorant about the dangers of their profession and don't want to jeopardise their livelihoods so rather turn a blind eye

I am hoping some of you can help me find credible information on this important health issue.

Huge thanks

I will be 60 yo in 6 mos and because of scares regarding deterioration of the skin when older, I quit smoking at age 28 and quit getting suntans by age 33 and stayed out of direct sunlight from then on. (I was never a drinker.) I got badly burned only on my back as a child & pre-teen.

Today my skin is essentially wrinkle-free and very limited sagginess. Most people presume I am in my early 40's sometimes younger (on good rest days :-) ) Except my back which is progressively clouded with dark "age" and "liver" spots speckled throughout in an extremely ugly manner.

I inherited my mothers skin -- which means that I have a lot of cysts under my skin that caused sporadic acne through most my life until I took a course of Accutane in my early 40's

On the other hand, my mother who is also incredibly youthful looking, spent hours every day maintaining a suntan as long as she could through the year (without burning) and without sunscreen. She never smoked and never drank. Around the age of 50, over a few months, her skin went from being very smooth (except the small acne scars) to a wrinkled prune. It was quite sudden and her skin looked exactly like the pictures of the "after sun" skin.

This did not happen to me. I am not able to attach pictures of me to this post but if I could, I have 3 close-ups of my face taken at age 58 and 2 of me in a candid group picture of physical fitness buffs out for dinner, taken in the last 3 months. If you did not have the 3 close-ups, I doubt you could pick me out of the crowd looking for a 60 yo. (everyone else ranged from 25-42 yo)

I know this is anecdotal, not science, but it convinces me that extensive exposure to direct sunlight is bad for at least the texture of one's skin.

With my Irish ancestry I'd come to shun the sun in recent years but thanks to Mercola.com I've changed my entire approach - and background reading elsewhere only confirms the false hold that the dermatolgists' position has on public policy.

The result is I now seek out the sun every day. Of course I still respect my genetic heritage and the limitations it imposes but the results have been remarkable. My mood and self-image have improved immeasurably and I know in my heart of hearts that I am healthier, calmer and more relaxed.

I'd always wondered why 20 cigarettes-a-day were so much more lethal in Glasgow or Dublin when compared to Athens (Greece) or Rome - or indeed why multiple sclerosis and heart disease is so much more prevalent in areas with little sun. The Irish suffer some of the highest rates in the world. Yes the diet does make a difference... but not that much. The fact is that Greeks and Romans are not suffering from critically-low levels of (protective) Vitamin D from January to June. I can't find the article now but it stated that c. 3000 fatal cancers are caused by sunshine annually in UK BUT 16,000 CASES ARE PREVENTED BY SUNSHINE. That's good enough for me. It's 11 am and a lovely day here in Italy so I'm off to the beach now! :-P

I had to go to the dermatolagist recently because of having skin cancer. Mine was caused by burning my forehead with a curling iron last year and it never healed. I let it go for a long time because I didn't realize that you could get skin cancer by burning yourself in that way. I have since learned that it can be caused by damaging your cells by an injury rather than the sun. Of course the dermatolagist made sure she gave me a fearful warning to never ever go out in the sun. My family have always been outdoor people and we all tan very easily, so I have no intention of hiding out in dark places away from the sun. I'm in my 50's and my parents are both dead now, but neither one of them ever had skin cancer and they both spent years in the sun. It is sad to see the fear people are having of the sun these days. I feel that one day soon insurance companies will refuse to cover a person if they go in the sun. They make you feel like a criminal for not being pastie white.

Tanning is your body's natural defense against sunburn By always using sunscreen you are interfering with your body's own protection system. If you must be out in the sun for an extended period of time -covering up with hats and clothing are much safer than chemical sunscreens. Also useful on occasion are sunblocks such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide (as long as they are not nano particals). These are minerals that sit on the surface of the skin and reflect the sun away from the body. Be wary of the other ingredients in these creams though as many chemicals in traditional body care products are toxic. There is a company in Australia that just came out with a certified organic product that should be available the beginning of August. Check it out at www.blissfullyorganic.com or email me for more info. Also helpful and safe is the naked mineral cosmetic line with an SPF of 15 in their foundations (www.itvventures.com/bliss)
