This is interesting, because I was set to have one inserted and taken off the list because I was off Aspirin.

The New Labour government in the UK has been treating patients as numbers to complet targets in NHS hospitals and with little consideration for the patient; that's me, who has been, it seems swept along on a conveyor belt like a supermarket chicken........a number on chitty to satisfy the governments target figures..........that of course, is no the way to operate a health system.

So.............bio-degradeable stents sounds like a revolutionary move forward in UK medicine and all credit due to the brilliant scientists and doctors who strive for better medicine.........well done to them all.

.

I was prescribed tablets and told to try them, this was not good enough for me, I asked the consultant what was the next step, he said an Angiogram was the blue chip test to definately confirm if there was a problem.

I requested the Angiogram and the diagnosis was confirmed.

The very next day I started a diet and in 9 days lost 1.5 stone; thats 21 lbs in weight, and felt marvellous.

breakfast is a bowl of cold skimmed milk; not too much, quaker oats, dried cranberries, two dried apricots, walnuts with also sometimes additionally a whole chopped banana........with a cup of ordinary skimmed milk'd tea.

I eat smaller amounts of food, haven't had sugar or salt for 15 years; now use lime, lemon to taste in salads.

I eat lots of coloured sweet peppers, tomatoes; fruit and vegetables.

Each day; a glass of red wine and a teaspoon of Armagnac brandy; recently an article prescribed this particular brandy especially good for the heart.

Since late 2006 and upto two monts ago, I could only walk about 300 yards before having to stop with chest ache.

Now I am able to walk each day, without any problems one to one and a half miles in the morning before work, and......still taking my medication, but no Aspirin, this made me feel ill and caused problems. I decided to stop taking Aspirin and subsituted it immediately with one 1,000mg of Cod liver oil capsule daily at breakfast.

Something has change inside me and I don't know what, I still have Angina as seen in the Angiogram, can now walk at weekends three and half miles in a day with no problems and now wonder what is going on.

Giving up things that are super bad for you is always a good idea. But to outlaw a whole class of foodstuff is generally a bad idea. Grains are not all bad (see my reply to Corgi). Also, do you eat a nutritious breakfast? You may have heard about a fad a few years ago "the peanut butter diet". One thing it had going for it was that it encouraged consuming a healthy balance of healthy oils and proteins for breakfast and lunch, and scaling back on dinner. The bad thing about "the peanut butter diet" was that it sent up little warnings about non-organic peanuts and their tendancy to concentrate soil contaminants and pesticides. Thankfully, good organic peanut butter is much more available and cheap (Whole Foods Mkt.- $2.99/lb.).

Respecting Dr Mercola and his approach to life is fine as far as that goes, but you need to strike a balance that is liveable for you. Giving up foods is seen as virtuous, and if this exclusion process is exclusive enough, ie, giving up cola or Twinkies, then it probably is. But excluding all grains from personal consumption is rather a blind approach to a healthy diet. While it is true that many grains are hybridized to a much less nutritious state than the original, wild grains, that doesn't mean that you are better off excluding all of them. Rye, oats, barley, amaranth, kamut, millet, quinoa, spelt & teff are all great grains for providing powerfully cleansing nutrients to your body. The key to a healthy diet is moderation, not absolute exclusion. Many times I have heard someone comment about a food that had a known allergen in it only to hear the savvy consumer reply "Don't worry, I know how much will trigger a reaction, and I really enjoy the other ingredients".

What should have been in the list to keep your heart healthy is to avoid all trans fats and most polyunsaturated vegetable oils. The list talks about oxidation from elevated levels of iron, but does not mention the oxidation that occurs from ingesting the already oxidized vegetable oils.

Just letting you guys know.....I was born in Sicily and all of my relatives on mom and dad's side are sicilians, many of them still there in Italy. Well, nobody in my family has ever died from a heart attack (or cancer.) Doctors always suggest a Mediterranean diet, but they don't even really know what it is. I have lived in Sicily many years off and on and I will tell you the typical diet for the day: breakfast, usually a ham and cheese sandwich, or something sweet, like sweet croissants, or my favorite, a sweet brioche eaten along with almond italian ice, but never cereal. For lunch, always pasta, usually with fresh tomato sauce, some sort of vegetable, and fish or chicken or beef. I've never known anyone there to be a vegetarian (even though I'm sure they exist today.) For the typical dinner, it's usually bread, all sorts of cheeses and lots of them, vegetables, some sort of canned meat or fish, or salamis, hams (yummy prosciutto,) mortadella (the italian bologna,) basically something made out of pork, which Italians eat so much of. Plus, ice cream very frequently. The main oils and fats are in fact olive oil and butter. Only when I recently visited did I first start to see margarines and soy based products in the stores, and I warned my relatives against them.

So see.......the typical Mediterranean diet is not what the experts have you think.

Assuming of course that some ag company hasnt pumped them full of chemicals and genetic tinkering. How many are consumeable of the following list, Rice, corn, wheat, grasses, rye, millet, sorgum, are the ones that come to mind first. Of these, which ones are useful, not useful, healthy, not healthy, to be avoided?

We live on potatoes, boiled or baked, cornbread baked, 7 grain bread, no white, rye bread, natural, Rices of all kinds and lots of beans and lentils and collards, cabbage, steamed or boiled and pastas. Is my diet lethal?
