They account for more than 25 percent of all drinks consumed in the United States. More than 15 billion gallons were sold in 2000 -- about one 12-ounce can per day for every man, woman

re: 10 Diseases Linked To Soda

I have no more than one soda a month, if that. Being diabetic, I don't drink the real sugar soda unless I am sharing and it is balanced with low glycemic foods. I will not drink diet soda! Bad news!

Once we got into going to other kids Birthday Parties, we had to bring our own koolaid. Then the kids that hung out with our kids (and come to visit at our house) started to realize, when you come to visit it was water or sugarless koolaid. Our daughter was a cheerleader in high school, a flyer (the girls you see being tossed into the air). Well, cheerleading is a dangerous activity. Needless to say, she suffered a broken ankle from a toss gone bad. When she got her ankle xrayed. Her doctor was astonished to say the least. For a teenager to have such good bone density in this day in age? Our daughter told him she doesn't drink any soda, never have. The only soda drinker in our family is my husband, and to think of it, we saved alot of money not buying alot of soda. But now that he is older, he has been drinking the sugar free and caffine free sodas. I truely believe our daughter would be suffering more, even after she has healed from her broken ankle, if she had been a soda drinker. And now that she is getting her degree in Pharmacy, she knows I did the right thing. She thanks me for that. And with young people we know, I tell them, "you can raise a child who does not drink soda and it way healthier for them".

I did, many years ago, use the fruit-flavoured ones that were popular to make gelatin desserts.

I'd like to offer a suggestion for a delicious, thirst-quenching alternatives to health-robbing drinks:

juice of 1 lime (or lemon) plus 1/8 tsp sea salt in 500ml spring water (especially good on hot summer days while working in the garden),

on cold days, this is good with hot water too with or without the salt.

Over time, I've found that eyebrows are raised less often when I request a pot of hot water and lemon/lime wedges at restaurants. I'm quite happy to pay for the privilege of drinking something I prefer, but find that there is generally no charge.

That's another problem- not only is it no longer a treat, it now comes in a bottle that contains 3 servings! I keep telling my kids this, but I'm not getting through yet. Very frustrating. It's making him fat too!
