My poor father (dead nearly a year now, type II diabetes) was a sucker for all these low fat (so therefore high carb) foods. I tried to explain to him that fats help deaden the appetite but nothing doing. One energy dense food that I find extremely effective in appetite suppression are almonds... 50g (2oz for the metrically- challenged) and I don't get a single hunger pang for 3 hours.

I am an elementary school teacher and have been working diligently on educating parents of the dangers of processed foods and the importance of balanced nutrition. I am greatly concerned over the rising number of obese children in my classroom which which I see is largely due to prepackaged meals and fast food. However, it never crossed my mind that it would also be important for parents to know how many calories their child should be consuming in a day. Does anyone happen to know how many calories a child of 6-7 years of age should consume in a day? And if not, does anyone know of any good websites that could help me with this? It would also be helpful to have a suggested healthful sack lunch menu with the appropriate calorie content so I can give parents the tools they need to help their children.

The media hype et al that promotes products that buyers unknowingly purchase that harm us all by subtle addiction to ingredients, is for us to become aware of. We don't need to fight this problem - but replace it with increasing health education for all citizens in every age group with the emphasis on well-being - rather than scaring us all with the negatives of the hundreds of diseases we've manage to think our way into."
