Bengal ( Sept 07 ) made a comment which I feel needs clarification. He suggested we research the history of agriculture and we will see that chemical fertilizers are absorbed by plants just as organic fertilizers are. Then where is the sulfur? Sulfur is vaporized during the high temperatures used to crackle ammonium nitrates and sulfates.

Farmers used to rotate crops to return nutrient back into the soil, and biblically they would even let the land rest on the

seventh year. Go to southern Kansas and you see the same corn that has been grown for decades, it is no longer as high as an elephant eye nor good for food, except for pigs. It should never be a sweetener nor a bad bio fuel. The Bible says we were only promised the land with it minerals and microbes necessary to restore that land. While chemists would alter the natural for their profit and not for our benefit. In Indiana a farmer's own cow manure is illegal for use on his own land. We have only sunlight to add to all that would be recycled and the use of chemicals disrupts the natural cycle of regeneration.

Here is the key, we spend the money. That money drives the machines of commerce, if we buy only locally grown then the men of commerce will use only the same produce. If we stop buying the prepared foods with their chemical additives to improve flavor and shelf life they will cease filling the shelves of our food stores. We have the power being that it is our money they want. Do we have the strength to purchase the least processed foods? Free of chemicals which our bodies cannot use to regenerate our cells as they have since our conception. Like processed white sugar most of the chemicals we ingests into our bodies cannot be assimilated without robbing other mineral from our body. We are not chemicals we are minerals and water, science would like us to believe we are Coke and Twinkies. We spend the money for the food we eat and when we exercise the power of the purse, commerce will listen

No, the government should not have to (nor should it be allowed to) protect us from ourselves. That said, it also should not be allowed to crawl into bed with every Tom, *** and Harry that asks for cash - and still be allowed to both legislate AND fund them. The issue isn't only protecting us, the issue is also funding/financing the criminals. AND, in turn, the criminals funding the government agencies.

The FDA, recently asking for millions more in federal funding, already gets nearly half its yearly budget from food and drug companies. Still, people scratch their heads at approvals of such drugs as Vioxx.

The USDA has a FOR PROFIT CORPORATION set up to aid in funding and such. It is called the Consumers Commodity Corporation (CCC) - if one looks at the board of this company, you will find representatives currently also working for/on the board of directors of: Monsanto, Tyson, Smithfield etc etc.

Ann Venemen (now in another agency, but formerly head of the USDA during the first GW administration) was legal staff for Monsanto, and was moved into the head position at USDA during the wave of lawsuits in which Monsanto charged organic farmers with patent infringement - claiming their scientists did not know their GM corn would cross-pollinate organic. Same for Mr. Johanns, who now decided to consider running for President. Our government, pharm. companies and big ag trade players like a baseball team and worse, they share them.

Come on. It is well past high time for a change in agriculture, pharmaceuticals AND government. The conflicts of interest are endless - and criminal.

I wonder how long humans would actually live if they weren't poisoned not only by over processed food, but by the packaging and pollutants almost everywhere. Then again, is that the main goal of life - to 'live' as long as we can?

I live in Colorado which is still one of the thinnest states. When I go to see my family in other states and get off the plane I am shocked to see the enormous people. I feel like I have landed on another planet where the beings are morphed into something other than human. I see entire families at the check out stands with fat parents and kids. They no longer look like human bodies should look.

We are nothing other than cattle in a feed lot getting fatttened up for slaughter. Feed a steer corn and it is marbled up and ready for market. Feed a human being corn and it is fattened up and ready to die.

Try reading the book, "The Maker's Diet" by Jordan Rubin. This book, and the online helps can lead to a more healthy lifestyle. The powers that be wants to see everyone unhealthy, to increase the size of their profits. Indeed, it is up to us as individuals to take matters into our own hands, and become proactive about our own health. As we have seen most Doctors have no clue, as to how to instruct one in the craft of maintaining one's own health. Perchance one becomes ill, most Doctors remain clueless as to how one might regain one's health. We the people have to read, and research for ourselves as to what direction to take. Take no one's word, find out for yourself. There is too much information for one to be terminally ill.

Doctors are basically agents of "Big Pharma" and as we have seen the Government is "Hog Tied" and uninformed because the people we hire to protect our freedoms, and maintain our rights, have long since their way. So now it is up to us the individual to find our own way. "The Dollar Chasers" in our various states capitols, and Washington only see one thing, dollars. Ours is a fight, because those who have the money are trying as best they can to keep America unhealthy, and we can either assist, or resist.

In short beware of Universal Healthcare, it will only serve to restrict more of your personal rights. Only what "Big Pharma" wants will be allowed. Meaning you have no say in the matter. Your health their way. Wake up America. If you sleep through this one you only have yourself to blame.

Even though this is a good program, it really isn't the govts job to protect us from unhealthy food and we don't want them too. We want less govt, not more. It's up to us to make our own decisions and for parents to make them for kids. If we ate mostly fresh fruits and some vegetables we would all be just fine in the food category.

C'mon parents! So what if your food industry promotes unhealthy garbage as food to our families and especially our children. So what if the food industry creates cheap unhealthy processed food and markets it so we will buy it. If we do NOT support the so called food industries by refusing to buy their products who are we hurting? Who are we helping? As parents and as intelligent adults, why are we so blinded by the obvious marketing strategies to suck us into actually spending our money on created processed unhealthy so called food? Are we brainwashed by a constant and increasing barrage of television advertisement for these products? Why are we even watching so much television and letting our children sit in front of the television and allowing all this brainwashing to continue? It is WAY past time to wake up to what's going on in our country and stop participating in the problem. How about if we go back to a healthy lifestyle a little at a time over a period of time and start introducing real foods into our diets and replacing the bad choices with good choices. How do we even begin to do such a thing when we have gotten so far away from what is good that we may not even know anymore? How do we break the food addictions that keep us going back for more even when we hate what we are doing? It could be that accepting the responsibility for participating in this problem and refusing to continue to blame our food industry could be part the solution. There are very few really healthy choices to be made at the grocery store since most items are processed and even the produce and dairy products are processed and chemicalized. There really are some good alternatives such as certified raw milk products and locally raised produce and meats. How about getting out of the house and enjoying nature, or even growing a garden with our kids or taking them fishing? There is so much more to life than watching television! We need to start replacing bad behaviors with good behaviors

I agree with you Katee. Most people do not want to know. I wish the public "school system" would help in advocating a high fruit/vegetable/nuts/seeds diet, rather than pitch this processed junk where they get subsidies for having a soda machine in their hallway. To me, it's pathetic that our nation has allowed the food industry to manipulate us all these years. We need to take a stand and start eating whole foods. If we all do this, then the processed food companies will go out of business. Be the change you want to see in the world.

It's disheartening to realize how much in life is greed driven. It's also so hard to make it change when the status quo seems to believe and live by the massive lies we've all been told for so many years. Even for many who DO make a concerted effort to live and eat as organically and healthy as possible, it's sometimes next to impossible to eat a meal without being exposed to toxic chemicals. It begins to feel like you must research every single item you purchase, the air you breathe, the water you drink, your doctor's opinion, reports by government agencies - the whole lot.

The more I learn, the more disheartened I become. And the more I ask and even demand answers, the more I get the "runaround" answers of "we're doing what we can."

I wrote a letter to Al Gore's local Climate Project rep in my city. I asked why there was no mention of the fact that animal farming was contributing more to global warming than even transportation. I asked why they didn't suggest eating less animal products as one of the many "action" steps one could take? The answer was that perhaps this was "too much" for the general public to handle.

Is it really too much for the public to handle the truth? Even if it means our lives may all be in jeopardy?

I suppose I know the answer but I keep hoping it will be different.

I guess grass roots is all we will really have for a long time to come.

It is the government at the top levels FBI/CIA etc... that control everything and are the most powerful in the world because of mind control to shape our culture and reach into other countries if they want. Everyone else who has power still does not compare to government power while they brainwash everyone to think it is someone else's fault. It has been going on for decades to divert blame and look like they are helping or can't help or point fingers at industries to take responsibility. Classic cover up for those who are truly well balanced, healthy, or knowledgeable and not influenced by their evil.

I suppose that we should all be grateful for the FDA/USDA not protecting us, for, if they DID, look at all the unemployment in the MEDICAL BUSINESS and MORTUARIES, to say nothing of the over population of our country.
