I'm a Newbie here - I like all your comments. Have had many cats for years - now I'm in a mobile home with a chihuahua and 5 parakeets. Not quite the same - The pix always make me smile. I'm a total animal lover.

(1) I blacked out the window in my bedroom. I mean, I taped over every inch of glass with aluminum foil. There has been a lot of research done that even a small amount of light like that from a streetlamp shuts off melatonin production. This one thing alone increased the quality of my sleep by a good 50%. I now sleep in essentially pitch black.

(2) I also wear a sleep mask on occasion

(3) After the sun has set, I wear orange colored glasses which block out the blue light. That is like from 7 PM until I sleep at 10 or 11. This allows your body to start releasing melatonin earlier and you get more out of your actual sleep. Check out the research by Richard Hansler on this idea. They have found that it is only the blue light that stops the melatonin from being released. You look kind of stupid wearing sunglasses at night, but after a couple of days, you will notice a difference and be a convert. You can still watch TV and do normal things. They have to block out all the blue light. I use BluBlockers, but Hansler sells lighter colored ones that only block out the bad light. Here's his website:

Be well.

I'd love your feedback on this.

Normally I sleep in my recliner. It started when I realized that taking Prilosec for the rest of my life was not a good idea. While weaning myself off of it, I slept in the chair to reduce 'reflux.' After a few days I realized that my back felt so much better in the morning than it had in a long time. Even though we had recently purchased a new good mattress (which did help some, for a while). I may never go back, unless I invest in an adjustable bed to sleep in a similar position.
