When corporate greed is allowed access to a decision maker via money there is a conflict of interest. This has been going on for decades. Just take a look at the head of the US FDA. Talk about putting the fox in the henhouse. The Chinese had a remedy for their FDA head who took bribes (and isn't honoraria a well concealed bribe?) they executed him. Do you think their new FDA head will be taking bribes anytime soon? Barbaric, but very, very effective.

The article states twice that the panel participants claimed that the payments did not in any way influence their decisions.

What bald-faced, shameless nonsense. They took the money. Any doctor with ethics would refuse it because it obviously raises the question of a conflict of interest.

This reminds me of the terrific John LeCarre thriller "The Constant Gardener," which was made into a fine movie. The book details the manner in which "imaginary" drug companies do drug testing in Africa without all that tiresome folderol of informed consent or payment. It's an eye-opener.

John LeCarre did research in Africa for the book. He is VERY careful to spell out in his epilogue that what he wrote is not based on any one drug company and that the facts in his books are all made up, any similarity to real stuff...yadda yadda. However. He also said that after doing his research, the actual drug company behavior depicted in TCG, compared to what's really going on, is "as tame as a holiday postcard."

Thank you Maine for being on top of this - and everyone thinks we're just in the sticks here................hehehhehe.

HEY YOU GUYS in all the other 47 states and DC get with it.............DRUGS BY ANY NAME ARE DRUGS - they kill, they mame, they damage..........alcohol should be illegal too, since it devastates more lives, families and relationships than pot ever thought of...........oh, but then Washinton would have a hard time functioning.......and might even start acting with a conscience........AND pharmaceuticals companies? Their one and only concern is just how much "Can we Make on This One?"

Imagine all the wonderful affects that could be achieved if the money spent on needless research and drugs was spent educating the public how to feed their bodies and families properly............ ooooohh.........so many of the nation's health woes gone in a flash...........IT'S A BEAUTIFUL IMAGE in my mind on this beautiful Morning in Maine.
