i do get in the sun every day that i can for at least 20 minutes as i am fair skinned.

i have read that older people ( i'm 68 ) have a problem in making vit. D from sunlight.

i was wondering if anyone knows anything about this.

i'm in the midst of finding a new doctor as mine will not run a vit D test as he says i'm getting enough!

how he would know is beyond me..i hate going to doctors so its hard for me to get going on this to have my blood tested. medicare will not pay for holistic or preventive care.

i did grow up in calif. and lived my whole life in the sun ( sunburn and all) is there a faciity that can just do a blood test without one seeing a doctor? i can't afford dr. mercolas one. :o(

Add to that the fact that most children spend their time indoors after school, playing video games, or on their computers, it's no wonder that they become ill.

Regarding skin cancer, we had the sad case of a lovely young woman, who died last week, after a long illness. She didn't like being pale, often had many sessions in a tanning booth when she was younger, and tragically, developed cancer. Before she died, she appeared several times on TV to warn us of the dangers of solariums.

Let’s start with this fact: the vast majority of doctors touting the benefits of vitamin D are not aware of discoveries made by researchers in the field of molecular biology, which have clearly shown that the “vitamin” D derived from diet and supplements is not a vitamin, but a steroid with immunosuppressive properties when elevated.

Also among Americans of African decent, the darker one's skin, and the further north one lives, the greater the likelihood of that person developing kidney disease. This is just a few of the many body function which break down, without vitamin D. Also I know the big "C" is a a deadly disease, and there is quite a great deal of misinformation about treatments, which includes sunshine. Just another indication that sunshine is indeed good for what ailes us.

The September issue had an article that goes into real depth about the physiological actions and benefits of Vitamin D3, as well as the wide range of problems associated with a deficiency. You can access it here: www.lef.org/.../sep2007_report_vitamind_01.htm

Unfortunately, the October issue isn't online yet, because in that issue, Dr. William Faloon writes an open "call-to-action" letter to President Bush stating that Vitamin D3 deficiency is directly responsible for "several hundred thousand" deaths in the US alone each year. If this subject comes up next month, I'll provide a link to it as well. Of course, being a supplement company, he suggests that each American supplement with 1,000 IU of Vitamin D3 each day. The cost of which is only $19 per year. And he says the LEF will donate 50,000 bottles of 365 x 1,000 IU capsules to the US government to provide to people who can't afford it on their own. Pretty compelling.

I know Dr. Mercola isn't a big fan of supplementation, and in this case, far recommends exposure to sunlight over supplementation with D3. But how about those of us who have more than exceeded our "lifetime" dose of sunlight when we were young? Pale complected, having lived in high UV regions and having been severely sunburned several times over a large area of our bodies (before the days of sunblock) AND who have had several surgeries to remove Basal Cell Carcinoma as a result. Supplement over sun? Or maybe he disagrees that there is such a thing as a maximum lifetime dose? I'm curious...

I still love the sun, but I love my skin MORE. As a result, I take my 1,000 IU of Vitamin D3 every day - except for days I get a few minutes of sun - I now live in the inferno that is Las Vegas.

Be well!
