-The only active ingredient that has been found to dissolve fat cells is sodium deoxycholate

-Deoxycholate was shown in 2004 to be effective in shrinking the size of lipomas (which are benign fat cell tumors)

-Side effects include: burning, swelling, nubmness, redness, and tenderness. The worst reaction that I found happened with two patients from the 2004 study. They suffered ecchymoses (ruptured blood going into subcutaneous tissue), but it could have been from poor injection technique. The 2007 study said that the injection was painful

-Though it is not known for certain where the fat goes, the body somehow gets rid of it, without causing any systemic effects (i.e. no increase in triglyceride levels)

-Fat is replaced by fibrosis

-The 2007 study just published and linked in the previous comments found no severe systemic effects after 6 months of the injection regimen

From the medical literature that I have read, there doesn't seem to be a real health problem with this procedure, albeit a long term safety study has not been done yet. I guess we will just have to wait and see with the new research being done.

Certainly putting something new into your body shouldn't be taken lightly; I've been a firm believer of this all my life. Nonetheless, I am very impressed with adding this science to the tool box of things that can help me look as good as I feel. In fact, I was so impressed with lipodissolve, that I even work for a major provider now. At fig., the focus is providing the patient with the tools to not only make lifestyle changes with their diet and excercise, but also help them get rid of trouble spots they've had all along. Oftentimes getting rid of those trouble spots is the jump start some people need to really start focusing on their bodies and health and get things moving in the right direction.
You're right, fat cells are broken down and excreted through the metabolic processes. And, as with any medical procedure, there are some possible side effects that you mentioned, like swelling, redness, itching. But far and away, lipodissolve patients are looking for a less-invasive option and lipodissolve is something they are very pleased with in the end.
Regardless, do your homework. Check out www.lipoinstitute.org as a great resource for more research and Q & A.

re: Fat-Dissolving Injections Too Good To Be True?

I've had this done myself. I'm 5'5" and weigh 120 pounds. I'm very fit, exercise daily and watch what I eat. However, I have 3 kids and they did a number on my abs. No matter what I did, I could never get my belly bulge to go away. I spoke with a plastic surgeon about this and he said that he would not recommend liposuction for me because I don't have a lot of fat. He recommended lipodissolve instead and referred me to a place that specializes in the procedure. This treatment has been around for many years and approx. 100,000 treatments have been performed with no severe side effects or deaths. I did my homework, read all of the studies, talked to others that have done it, etc. After much research I decided to do it. I now have a nearly flat tummy once again and feel great about the way I look. I would recommend this to everyone looking to get rid of a small amount of fat. It's not really for weight loss. I only lost 3 pounds but lost 3 inches of fat.

re: Fat-Dissolving Injections Too Good To Be True?

Not everything in medicine is bad, there are some viable treatments to help people and in this case to physically reduce a small amount of body fat that could ultimately help them to emotionally feel better about themselves. And happier people are better in my book.

re: Fat-Dissolving Injections Too Good To Be True?

They ask: where does the fat go?
