I have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and as a result I react to most supplements on the market including the vitamin D supplements I have tried. I don't think it is the vitamin D (or other active ingrdient) I am reacting to but rather the binders, fillings, coatings and capsules that they use for supplements. For instance, gelatin contains free glutamate (as in MSG) and MSG is one thing I definitly react to. This eliminates anything in a gelatine capsule.

When I had my vitamin D tested at the end of last summer, it was right on the high end of normal. I will have to rely on this carry me through winter along with the small amount I get from eggs.

Vitamin D.

Hope this helps.

Since getting into Dr. Mercola's way of thinking and starting to get some sunshine (whilst respecting my Irish genetic heritage) I've been amazed at how all my "numbers" have improved (blood pressure, cholesterol, tryglycerides, fasting blood sugar) but especially improved is my overall mental outlook which is, well, "sunnier". It isn't all sunshine I know but the dermatologists have had the upper hand for too many years now. Now we KNOW why twenty cigarettes a day and a poor diet is so much more lethal in Scotland or Ireland than it is in Portugal, Italy or Greece! It ain't rocket science... and it ain't the "Mediterranean diet" ... at least what I've seen them shoveling down their necks in southern Italy where I've never seen so many obese people. It's 'o Sole mio' .... and I'm glad I discovered that early enough to be able to undo at least some of the damage I did to my body as I hid in the shade for so many years.

I work outdoors. I get tons of sun. I am very healthy. Recent test result put my D at 29. That's not even in the sufficient range. Supplementation with regular testing seems the way to go. Among other things, I now take 5000IU per day.

This month's Life Extension mag (October issue) delves into he subject at some length...Faloon included a letter he wrote to the president - and his position is that D supplementation should be mandatory & imposed, with failure to comply sanctioned (another just smart enough to be dangerous sort of guy....).

This came across the desk in the past couple days, as well. good article:

http://www.lewrockwell.com/miller/miller25.html

re: Vitamin D -- The Secret of a Long Life?

Has anybody noticed that in virtually every article posted here praising a certain vitamin, mineral, herb etc, there is always "This finding could lead to new drugs to fight cancer and other diseases". I find this so so frustrating. What's wrong with the way God made things. Obviously big Pharma knows by now that synthesizing one particular property of something and making it into a "drug" is deadly. But you can't patent Vitamin, you can patent a synthetic drug. VitalVotes Syndrome again after reading this. Boy does my head hurt.

re: Vitamin D -- The Secret of a Long Life?

In addition to relaxing 20-30 minutes in the sunshine each day if possible, Carlson's lemon flavored cod liver oil is my favorite way to get my Vitamin D. Only UV-B produces Vitamin D.
2. UV-B is only present during midday between 10 am - 2pm.
3. UV-B does not penetrate glass, cloud, or fog.
4. In high Latitude areas above 30 degree UV-B is not present in 6 months out of the year. Most of the US is above 30 degree.

This means you can only get enough UV-B to generate sufficient Vitamin D in the summer months between 10am-2pm. Also, the darker your skin color the harder it is for your body to produce Vit D. You also need 80% body coverage. For the average person in the US it's nearly impossible to get enought Vit D from sunlight on a daily basis.

How about Vitamin D from food sources? Well lets see who here likes liver, kidney, pork fat, beef tallow, butter and egg yolk? these are the food we are told to avoid. Perhaps our best choice is cod liver oil. If you're on a tight budget that too is out.

Supplement
This is where i get my Vitamin D. It's relatively cheap and convenient. You should also take calcium and magnesium when taking Vit D. I take a chelated cal-mag in one pill with 2000 iu of Vit D3. Source Naturals make a good D3 1000 iu, 200 tablets for $6.

re: Vitamin D Lengthens Life

Dr. Mercola has been saying this for some time.

Once again, he has been on the cutting edge with information that could save your life or the life of a loved one.
