The problem with our society is that they don't apply to it and are very lazy. Its much easier to swallow poisen esp. when the medical doctors says its safe. No matter how convincing or influencial you are people are not going to listen. They have to make the commitment, they have to see it for themselves. Dr. A

Small studies and case reports have shown that 10 to 30 percent of patients who are prescribed metformin show signs of reduced vitamin B12 absorption leading to clinically significant abnormalities in about 30 percent of cases.

A recent cohort study2 conducted at the University Hospital of Strasbourg, France, examined patients with a diagnosis of metformin-associated cobalamin deficiency and concluded that metformin causes at least 6 percent of the incidence of vitamin B12 deficiency and that resulting hematologic abnormalities and peripheral neuropathy are quite common.

Different mechanisms have been proposed, including alterations in intestinal mobility, bacterial overgrowth, and interactions with a complex of intrinsic-factor/vitamin B12 and cubilin, an endocytic receptor involved in the absorption of cobalamin. B12-intrinsic factor complex uptake by ileal cell surface, a calcium-dependent process, also is affected by metformin because of impaired calcium availability.3-5

During the past five years, the increasing knowledge of the role of insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes has led to a linear widespread use of biguanides for the treatment of this condition and other conditions associated with insulin resistance, such as metabolic syndrome, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and polycystic ovary syndrome; therefore, in patients with vitamin B12 deficiency or evidence of peripheral neuropathy or macrocytosis, the use of metformin always should be considered within the differential diagnosis of food-bound B12 malabsorption. The clinical significance of metformin-induced low levels of serum vitamin B12 associated with an increase in serum homocysteine levels as a risk factor for vascular disease is still controversial. Calcium supplementation appears to be an effective treatment5 as well as intramuscular or oral crystalline cyanocobalamin. Discontinuation of metformin also should be considered in refractory cases;

When my patients have tried to excercise and eat to have lower weight and nothing happens, it can be so frustrating. We have had great results by supplementing with Fish Oils and Vitamin D. It can really create a shift that allows exercise and whole foods to make a difference. You can search on this site for many great articles on Fish Oils and Vitamin D. They really help with Diabetes type 2.

Fresh air, sunshine, farm fresh whole foods, prepared in ones own kitchen, by ones own hands, exercise, proper hydration, proper rest, and a good spiritual posture, and sleep at the proper time will go further than any thing "Big Pharma" can conceive.

Trouble is too many of us are not willing to make such changes, and we want the quick fix, which does not exist. Being healthy takes time, and sacrafice, and NOT being like everyone else. check out www.hacres.com, for some good practical help.

I am reading his book for my own health (although I am not diabetic), and buying books to give to my diabetic relatives and some diabetic friends. His is a rather amazing story, that impressed me, and I hope others may find this to be helpful also!

They interviewed an inner city woman who had started a big organic garden, which she was lead to do because her young son had developed all sorts of allergies. She was explaining that it is easier to get drugs and guns in their neigborhood than it is to get a tomato. The neighborhood stores sell lots of booze and cigarettes, chips, sodas, cereals and other processed foods but the people have absolutely no access to fresh fruit or vegetables. They live entirely on fast food and processed food. Is it any wonder there is so much obesity, epidemic health problems, not to mention the social problems resulting from such a poor diet. The sad thing is, these people have no choice in the matter. And if they suddenly should have access to fresh wholesome food, they don't know what to do with it. One of the children who came out of the store with 2 bags of chips, when asked about tomatoes said, "ugh, tomatoes are nasty."

This in my opinion is a form of genocide.

So, yes it can be done without meds and insulin. That was the first thing my doctor said to me was let's put you on some meds and named Avandia as the one she would use.
