It is so natural and relatively inexpensive to raise animals this way, I wonder why this meat is not fairly close in price to commercial antibiotic-growth hormone-grain fed animals.

A tip I learned from a friend who farms fallow deer is to actually cook the venison from frozen or semi-frozen as it seems to retain the moisture better. As an aside almost all beef from here in NZ is grass fed so in a plug for our farmers if you see NZ beef it is worth a try, but be warned grass fed tastes quite different to corn finished and may be an accquired taste.

We are lucky to have a local supermarket that is open to suggestions for the organic products they stock and their prices are reasonable. They are usually less than the same product sells for at an organic shop in the nearest large city. Overall, the extra cost is probably in the range of 10 to 20% more.

re: How to Buy Organic Without Breaking the Bank

This post was deleted because it violated our Terms Of Use :
Abuse, harass, humiliate, deceive, threaten, impersonate, intimidate or engage in any other abusive behaviors with those who comment on Mercola.com.

re: How to Buy Organic Without Breaking the Bank

They forgot one important way to save money, grow your own food, that way you know what it has been grown in.

Mary

re: How to Buy Organic Without Breaking the Bank

Where beef is concerned, ... the healthiest meat should be from those cattle that have been fed purely what nature designed them to eat,.. which is grass. ..... Any "feed" which is not simply pasture grass from grazing or hay of course, .. is not good for the animal which was not designed by nature to consume grains. ....... I'm not sure I understand where the added expense comes from when raising cattle by grazing them on grass and not having the added expense of giving them steroids, hormones or antibiotics. ..... I suppose it might cost the owner more to lease pasture than to buy grain feed.
.........Maybe someone here understands why grass fed beef costs so much more than feed lot commercial beef.

Also,... when purchasing produce at a local farmers market,.. do not assume that what those folks are selling is "organic". ...
