He advocates common sense hand in hand with mainstream medical science and has treated and returned to health many patients who were clinically hypothyroid but had normal thyroid chemistry and has reported these results in a preliminary paper entitled “Clinical response to thyroxine sodium in clinically hypothyroid but biochemically euthyroid patients”.

I am 5'3" and I weighed close to 200 lbs when this happened. I decided to take my life into my own hands and started to walk everyday and attend water aerobics classes 3 times a week and lifted 3 lb free weights for my arms for 20 minutes twice/week and stopped eating sugar. For the next year, I continued this regime and went down to 160 lbs, went down from a size 20 to a size 14, all my lumps in my hips dissappeared, my belly decreased and felt GREAT! I had never felt that good in my life! During that year of exercise I used to have hot flashes which is caused by the drop in estrogen which confuses the hypothalamus—which is sometimes referred to as the body's "thermostat"—and makes it read "too hot."The message is transmitted by the nervous system's chemical messenger, epinephrine, and related compounds: norepinephrine, prostaglandin, serotonin.

A year later before I turned 50 I started to get strange symptoms; pain in my elbows, top of the trapezoid muscle, difficulty raising my arms above my head and in my hips. All of these pains are intermittent except for lifting my arms; unable to lift ft small wts: too painful. Less energy for H2O aerobics as I start shivering in the water which is very upsetting. Have started to skip going. I have an older doctor who has told me to quit complaining. I started working in the schools 5 years ago; have never gotten sick in my life; not even colds! Does this sound like fibro?

I hate feeling this way...am putting on weight again and eating sugar. ANY IDEAS??

Ten pages of comments so far. Don't have time to read them all, but just wanted to let those interested know that there is a Blog Talk Radio audio from April 14. 2008 about fibromyalgia on Dr. Elizabeth Vliet's website, herplace.com. Just look in the Archived audios. Like she says, you would think that in a disease which is 80% women, and mostly in the over 40's, doctors would be connecting it to hormones. But no, as usual, they are saying that it is due to emotional trauma, blah, blah. Insomnia, which goes along with fibromyalgia, is common in peri-menopausal and menopausal women. While many women don't want to even consider bioidentical hormones, others might.

I was healthy until a car accident in 1995. It is 2009 and I am still working on complete recovery, but believe I see the light at the end of the tunnel. I firmly believe that this condition is totally reversible. It should be like a broken bone that is put in a cast and once healed that is it. This condition can be considered very simple or deeply complex depending on how you're looking at it. Reading all the posts notice how everyone likes to give a name to their "disease" (their particular symptoms) which is a waste. I consider fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue, etc. just symptoms, not a disease. The real "disease" is the breaking down of your immune system from the environment, an accident, or whatever. Your system is broken and each person breaks down in a unique way. It all traces back to the immune system. Your only focus should be on getting your immune and hormone system up and running again so it can make the repairs. The treatment for all these diseases follows the same path and that is why you don't need to distinguish between them. That is the simple part. The complex part is what is your unique treatment to get the system going again? More research is not needed. I believe all the tools you need are here now. Your tool chest must include: Diet change, hormone testing, parasite control, emotional healing (EFT), bodywork, Prolotherapy, and any other testing and treatments as needed. This is easier said than done. It is difficult to find treatment centers like Mercola's that work on a complex health issue. Even his clinic missed my main pain issue-loose ligaments from minor whiplash-which I corrected with Prolotherapy (www.caringmedical.com/index.asp). If exercise hurts check this out. (Also see trigger point therapy). Don't let others convince you you're not sick. You are very sick and deserve proper care.

Michael and Mary Eades - Protein Power. This book really enlightened me on many topics. They really seem to know their stuff. Their chapters on cholesterol and blood sugar were truly enlightening. As a side note, I followed their protein power plan to the letter and lost over 45 lbs and the improvement in my blood panels was nothing short of amazing! I also knew a guy that totally went off of his blood pressure & diabetes medications after using their program. If you have been diagnosed with these Fibromyalgia or C.F.S. it might be worth your while to look into the magnesium deficiency theory. After all, most of us are deficient in this mineral that is used by every cell in the body, plus it's natural, inexpensive, and readily available. :-)

Interestingly, as far back as we know of, my maternal relatives have had many very similar symptoms that would lead me to believe it can be hereditary. I am also an extremely sensitive person both physically and emotionally and think this contributes to the problem as I tend to react to many things. After many years of treating fm I have over a long time learned what is good and bad for me. We are all individuals and must never think there is a one-size-fits-all solution for anyone. What works for me is clean, natural diet with avoiding foods I am sensitive to such as citrus, many fruits except berries and anything processed. I have had massage therapy and rolfing, which was the most helpful, and continue to have chiropractic treatments as needed. Yoga gives me the calm I need daily, weight training and cardio (light workouts) gives me strength, stamina and energy and better sleep at night. I know which supplements really work for me and many of those items I learned about on this site. I also found that hormone balancing with bio-identical hormones (as monitored by a provider who specializes in hormone treatment) has been a huge help for me as my symptoms worsened as my hormone levels got lower. I absolutely rely on melatonin in order to get good sleep and take 1-2 mg sublingual (melts under the tongue) which works far better for me than the capsule or tablet form. I have also let go of toxic relationships in years past and only continue those relationships that foster love and caring and thus contribute to health and happiness. I am so very thankful to Dr. Mercola who has been a great source of health information for me and my family. The information provided on his site is some of the best out there and I believe anyone who takes the knowledge gleaned from him and applies it will be greatly helped.

I don't discount that *some* cases are Lyme disease mis-diagnosed. And *some* cases turn out to be food-related.

But what about the huge discrepancy between the occurrence of fibromyalgia symptoms and the two genders? With so many more women having symptoms that fit, they can't ALL be Lyme, as aren't just as many men likely to get Lyme? And the rest can't all be food-related, because wouldn't just as many men have food problems? There has to be a hormonal link that makes so many more women have these symptoms.
