I drive a turbo-diesel in the UK. I am always amazed that they are virtually non-existent in the U.S.A. My car does around TWICE the mileage as its petrol equivalent. It has a catalytic converter that results in no smoke and no diesel stink. It is as quiet as its petrol equivalent. When I get passengers on board, the petrol (gas) junkies can't believe how fast and quiet this beastie is.

However, I was knocked out by the new Tesla electric sports car. It costs around 1 Cent per mile to run. It out-performs a Porsche. It can do 0-60 in around 4 seconds and is almost silent. Unlike your typical battery car, this rund for around 240 miles Yes, the very small first production run have made the headlines and, at 40,000 Pounds (around $80,000) it is not cheap. But.. if you ARE a performance junkie (I'm not, I have to say!) you would have to spend $124,000 on a Porsche 911 GT3RS to get 0-60 in 4 seconds. The CEO of Tela IS developing a people carrier for around $40,000 and a lower priced family car for $30,000. Now THAT is competitive... especially if you are paying $9.50 for a gallon of gas like we are in the UK....

The battery life is 100,000 miles, but with the way battery technology is impoving (that fab. laptop battery that lasts 30 years on one charge..) who knows where we'll be with car batteries in 5 years from now.. I'm saving my pennies already :^)

This is interesting artistry ...unless you are the mother of teen /young adult males.....enough with the "car is a cool tool" commercials. We have enough data that confirms that young males frequently emulate or at least try to do so....what they see in the media....witness the "Fast & the Furious" phenomena.

I think this love affair with cars being anything but transportation is irresponsible!
