Install a water softener (Kinetico is best as it's the most environmentally friendly). Soft water will allow one to use natural soap, will rinse your skin and hair thoroughly..same for the fabrics against your skin. My husband had terrible skin rashes but since we got the water softener, dechlorinator, and switched to Dr. Bronners or other chemical free cleaners, his skin completely cleared.

Except for maybe their bottoms, I don't feel babies need to washed with cleaning products. They are pretty clean and don't get into much muck before they start walking and even then I don't see the point of over using soap on them. I think there's an over emphasis on keeping clean and I believe that putting anything other than products like pure coconut butter on a baby's skin may cause problems like skin allergies further down the line.

I say, "just use as little soap and shampoo as possible". Babies certainly don't get as dirty as an adult, unless they decided to play with their food LOL .... and yes then, we do need to bring out some cleaning artillery to remove all that gunk from their hair and body. There's safe products out there, and although they cost more, a little goes a long way and in the long run, they are cheap if we factor in medical cost to heal our family.

Also, we can reduce our carbon footprint if we using less detergent. I've been reading up on manufacturing of goods, and I found out, it takes a lot of energy to produce 1 bottle of baby shampoo or any shampoo for that matter. The amount of energy to create the plastic bottle. The amount of water that goes into the production of the actual liquid shampoo. The amount of gas to fly the goods to our destination. The gas for the truck to bring the goods to the supermarket or drug store. Heck, a lot of these stuff are not biodegradable either. So, by cutting down on cleansers, we are, in our own little way, helping us and Planet Earth, one step at a time.

Although it only makes enough for 8 - 10 shampoos, so you have to keep up with it, as long as you have access to bulk herbs locally, it is quite inexpensive and a very safe and acceptable alternative to all the shampoos out there with sodium laurel sulfate in them, including Johnson's Baby Shampoo. Even many of the so-called "natural" shampoo manufacturers put this toxin in their product as a surfactant, or foaming agent. But it is a proven carcinogen. I would like to applaud Dr. Mercola for sticking his neck out and preaching this truth. And like Dr. Mercola pointed out, It's important to note that it's not necessarily the ingredients that make up the products, but rather the "state of the art" manufacturing process that is the culprit here. That is not to say that there aren't plenty of companies out there using less than healthy, products, but that even companies who make the extra effort to use quality ingredients may not be aware of what the manufacturers end up adding (ie trace amounts of industrial lubricants and solvents). And the government will tell you that at parts per billion or parts per trillion, these harmful chemicals aren't dangerous. However, it's the daily exposure to them over long periods of time that really add up. We have to look at the bigger picture and realize that it's not just these chemicals, but the chemicals in everything else as well and when you combine ALL of them, it does become dangergous. Too much emphasis on keeping babies clean. They don't need to be soaped all over and certainly not their hair. Avoid any products (natural or synthetic) on your babies and they will have less tendency towards skin allergies as well. If anything, massage them with pure organic coconut oil once in a while. It won't harm their delicate skin and they'll enjoy the physical contact.

Most people have no idea what they are doing to themselves and their children with all of the toxic chemicals that they use daily. Shampoos, conditioners, deodorants, lotions, hairsprays, hair gels, laundry detergent, fabric softener. They are just walking toxic clouds. Personally I resent being assaulted by all of the chemicals and chemical fragrances that other people use and subject me too when I am anywhere near them. Fragrance chemicals are some of the worst.

Buy Dr. Bronners by the gallon. Free shipping at their website. Instructions are to dilute it. Lasts longer and ends up being as cheap or cheaper than the toxic cheap stuff. Try Beauty Without Cruelty Shampoos/Conditioners. Check and compare internet store prices. Very cheap for large bottles. Safe and works well.

BTW most Jason's products have chemical fragrance in them. If you see "fragrance oils" listed in the ingredients it is chemical fragrance.

With so many non-toxic products now available there is really no excuse to have these toxic products on the market. Theses companies that manufacture and market them should be brought up on charges agains the American people. Fragrance are pure poision. One day it will be revealed that they are even worse than the cigarette companies in the chemicals that they use and they way that they try to addict the public to keep buying and using them. It can't come too soon.

After I had my fist baby, I developed severe dermatitis on the palm of my right hand (the hand I use to wash the kids!) It itched day and night, and I could not get rid of it with any of the treatments the doctor gave me. After 4 kids and a few years of dermatitis, I stopped using all johnson & johnson baby products and switched to organic hair & body products for the kids. I did not change any of my household cleaning products or my personal products at that stage. My dermatitis disappeared within days! I felt terrible that I had used such products on my kids, although they did not show the same symptoms as myself. I have never used anything but organic or natural products on my kids since then, and my dermatitis has not returned. Whenever I buy a new product, I go to the EWG cosmetic database and check its rating. If the product is not listed, I enter the ingredients as a new product and it rates it for you. It give you a good inication of its safety.

I showed this to my wife(we have 3 kids 12, 8 and 5) and we always used Johnson's "no More Tears" shampoo on the kids (still do on the youngest) she immediatly threw it in the garbage and just wondered what we can use on kids hair(esp the 5 year old) She also thre out her sampoo that she use(me Im bald so i only use a bar of soap on my head) One thing she was wondering what do you reccomend for African American women in place of hair relaxer (she feels she needs to use that)to keep her hair from getting frizzy & nappy w/o a lot of toxic chemicals?(if your familiar with African American female hair)
