Betavoltaic batteries in themselves aren't a hoax--they were invented in the early part of the 1900's. They've been used in some military satellites for years. They're too big right now for use in portable consumer devices. Maybe a few years from now they'll be ready for laptops, etc. Whether the Air Force is working to shrink them to a size that can be used in laptops, etc., that may be the hoax part, but more likely just overoptimistic reporting.

I know that's how the old smoke detectors worked; they used a small amount radioisotope that bounced off smoke particles into a detector. But how much radioisotope is needed for any particular power application. It seems to me the amount of radiation needed may be geometrically proportional to the load.

Like an engine........if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Once a PC is working OK, then I am a great believer in leaving it alone and not adding the next system to upgrade it.

One typical example for me.......Windows ME.....a nightmare....a disaster......a system that did not work at all.......that is until after ignoring so called experts who warned me off XP; updated to XP; wonderful, reliable and it works.

Now as for Vista...........no way, not until the gremlins have all gone.j

If a PC/Laptop does the job that you want it to do and you are happy, leave it alone, tread carefully before upgrading and don't upgrade because everyone else does.

My husband says this is a hoax. We went to the website of the Air Force Research laboratory.

We typed in Betavoltaic & the search at this site didn't recognize the word. Another site gave the same info as this link, but several sites listed this as a hoax.

That is great, but your laptop doesn't stay up with technology for 30 years. So what good does it do?
