The real mercury danger is when it is not already combined with selenium or a protein that neutralises it. Dental amalgam is just that, zero selenium there.

PS: "oily fish such as tuna"? No such thing. Mackerel has approx equal ratio of fat to protein; tuna has 1/50th the fat/protein ratio!

On the other hand we as humans have a digestive system which does not accomodate animal protein. For proof explain why man does not, and cannot fully digest animal protein? Why do we carry so much undigested animal protein just lying around in our digestive systems. For proof, read autoposy report of Elvis Presely, and John Wayne.

Like it or no, man was not designed by our Creator to eat a flesh based diet. The ingestion of flesh as a food source only came about as a result of the Great Flood. Otherwise everything we nees as far a nutrition goes we can get from plants.

Mercury has existed in the oceans since the day one. Mercury contamination of fish as a health problem began some thirty years ago when fish in the bay waters of a city in japan developed 50 ppm of mercury due to pollution from a paper plant using soluble mercury salts causing the people who ate these fish to develop mercury poisoning and become very ill and die. The FDA arbitrarily decided that one hundredth of 50 ppm or 0.5 ppm would be the max allowed. Then they found that deep sea fish like tuna and swordfish exceeded that level and took them off the market! They later found that mercury was always present in these fish at that level Mercury at that level never was dangerous unless you ate excess fish in which case the high levels of omega 3 would likely cause more problems than the mercury! The need for more omega 3 in the American diet far out ways the phantom problems from the mercury in these fish even for pregnant women and young children. Much of this hype comes from the pharmaceutical industry who would rather sell pills than good food!

As for eating 'mercury-contaminated' fish, dietary guru Dr Aajonus Vonderplanitz claims the methyl mercury in raw fish is harmless, becoming toxic only when cooked. The plot thickens!

I shall continue to eat my raw tuna, salmon and oysters. Plus krill oil as an extra backup.

This is from their website:

Omega-3, EPA & DHA doesn't come from fish, it comes from algae, the food they eat. V-Pure is a highly concentrated and 100% toxic free, organic source Omega-3 from a sustainable resource. It's also the only vegetarian omega-3 in the world with both EPA & DHA.

1. Make changes in your own life and environment to stop producing so much CO2 causing this contamination.

2. Demand now, that your governments both local, regional, and national, take courageous and innovative steps to stop pollution that contaminates many food sources.

3. Demand regularly from your local groceries that they provide you with mercury tested wild fish. (they are all consumer driven)

4. There are actually lots of wild, contaminant free fish out there but you have to be discriminating. Putting American wild fisherman out of business is not the answer.

5. Whole Foods which is always denigrated on this site, does offer totally mercury free tuna both fresh and canned. Read the labels and ask to be sure.

6. While it's great that we have things like Krill Oil, and I purchase it from Mercola.com, we are simply creating another environmental mess by consuming this ocean based nutrient simply because it's currently plentiful. Krill are essential for literally thousands of ocean living animals who have no other choice but to fit naturally into the food chain. We are invading another environment irresponsibly to take what we need, instead of improving the enviroments around us in order that they might support us in a healthy way. Do we ever learn?

7. Do we really want to become a culture dependant upon a variety of supplements and pills in our search for health rather that the whole foods we like to preach about? How much energy consumeed and pollution created by the harvesting of these raw materials, processing and packaging them, plastics in packaging them, shipping them? This is creating health?

I know the intentions are good but it seems as always we're attacking the problem backwards! Basic health should not have to come from ANY bottle.

.. krill populations are a small fraction of what they used to be. This doesn't auger well for the marine life that depends on this food source. Maybe he regrets an earlier statement, when he was new to alternatives, to not supplement if possible, thereby discouraging supplementaton. Those of us brought up on Drs Pauling, Passwater, Atkins etc, and who have massively supplemented all along, as well as bepng extremely careful with what we cook, what we eat and drink, ,welcome his supplement recommendations. One dark cloud remains on the horizon. If the vicious German model, Codex Alimentarius comes into worldwide effect,, we lose ALL natural supplements, and Dr Merc will also not be allowed to inform, - this is Big Phaerma joperful death-blow to alternative health, which the FDA will happily impose. Alreay FDAy will destroy any nutrient company the promotes healt giving information, with its product. This even happned to US cherry growers who were threatened with court action when they promulgated scientific info re the arthritis curative effects of a certain type of cherry. We are truly living in strange times. .

re: Experts' Advice to Eat More Fish Tainted by Conflict of Interest

Maj is correct. Levels of mercury in light tuna (and other deep sea fish and marine mammals such as seals and toothed whales) are extremely variable. Fish low in the food chain (herring, sardine) is almost universally low in mercury.

If caught in coastal waters off the US, Japan or Europe I MIGHT believe the scare stories of bioaccumulation.

I eat tuna (c. 4oz, + 4oz of tinned sardines) every single day of my life but I ensure that it's caught in the Gulf of Guinea off West Africa, one of the least industrialised parts of the planet. Another reason for my scepticism is the evidently excellent health and happiness of the Japanese, Icelanders, Norwegians and Faeroese, most of whom eat fish every day. The Icelanders scored as the happiest people on the planet and they look so d**n healthy on it! The Norwegians (along with the Japanese) have the lowest obesity rate in the developed world - 8% -as well as just about the lowest infant mortality whereas the Scots, 160 miles away across the North Sea, who no longer eat much fish, have one of the highest.

One aspect Dr. Mercola has not mentioned (to my knowledge) is that the less body fat you have and the more active you are the more quickly you eliminate bioaccumulant toxins from your body, in part because your fat is more 'dynamic' (being broken down and built up more frequently) allowing the excretory organs (basically the kidneys and gut) to get a handle on mercury much more quickly. Perhaps it's the fact that the peoples mentioned above ARE slim and scarily active (National sport in Norway? Cross-country skiing) that their exposure to mercury and other heavy metals (cadmium, lead) is less of an issue. Maybe mercury (and other biotoxins) in Americans are as much an issue of obesity and inactivity as actual exposure.

Out of curiosity I shall get my blood mercury levels checked when I go for my post-Christmas annual check and let you know (though I do have a head full of amalgam fillings so we won't learn much).
