First off regular sugar (sucrose) is half fructose and half glucose

Most fruit and fruit juices are mainly fructose.

The point is the American diet already had much fructose before HFCS

20 years ago fructose was promoted as an alternative to sucrose since it has a much slower rate of absorption

This is because fructose has to be first processed by the liver to be converted to glucose

Therefore insulin and glucose levels do not spike therefore this reduces insulin resistance.

In addition fructose is 50% sweeter than glucose so one can use less of it.

I think the main issue is to minimize amount of sugar and to reduce blood glucose and insulin spikes, it seems one could use less fructose for same sweetness and have reduced blood glucose and insulin spikes.

I would use small amounts of fruit juice sweetener rather than HFCS as this is a more natural and tastier form of fructose.

Can anyone dispute that fruit juice sweetener is preferable to table sugar (sucrose)?

What constitutes moderation in consumption of whole fruits? So far, the way most advice on the matter goes, upto 10 servings of fruits and veggies, about 3 at each main meal, is considered good for health. Is this moderation, especially i it happens to be weighted slightly in favour of fruits? I am totally confused by this remark at the end of the article. Someone please clariy.

Very watered down orange juice for breakfast. Giving up pop has been empowering and I don't miss it a bit. Dr. M made the comment about 142lbs of sugar a year per person being the average consumption. A couple years ago, I did the math and put a 'days' worth of sugar in a zip lock bag...than put a days worth of 5lbs per year in another bag. I showed them to my students and I hope it made a big impression. The comparison was about a spoonful to almost 1/2 a pound.

We also measured out the amount of sugar in soda pop. Depending on the brand it was about 1/4 of a cup of sugar to one 20 oz bottle....GROSS! You can measure about 5grams fits into a teaspoon if I remember right. When you show someone really how much sugar is in pop...why would you want to hurt your body like that?

SHOW YOUR KIDS!

I think our culture has become so conditioned to having soda, juice, and other sugar laden beverages, we have lost touch with the fact that our bodies need water and a lot of it. Your body needs about half it's weight in ounces of water a day to stay properly hydrated. The great news is that when you cut out sweetened beverages from your diet, you actually start to crave water. Honestly, the most refreshing drink on a hot summer day would be a tall glass of water. Once you remove these toxins from your diet, they actually are not as satisfying when you consume them again.

I eat pasture based meats, eggs, and dairy. All of my grains are whole, fresh ground by me, and I eat lots of fresh veggies grown in my garden. The only sweetener I use regularly is one teaspoon of organic cane sugar in my morning cup of decaf coffee. The only processed food I eat on a some what regular basis is organic granola. My beverage of choice is tap water from my 400 ft deep well. When I want something sweet, I eat fruit. I take out one small bag of trash a week from my kitchen. I learned a long time ago, the more trash I threw out, the more money I was wasting, cause all of that packaging was costing me lots of money. I find eating the way I do, even if I had to buy all of the food and not grow or raise any of it, is cheaper than the S.A.D. and way better for me.

Before I started raising my own meats, I had gotten to the point where I couldn't eat that store bought stuff. Store bought pork got to be uneatible by the 1990s. A carton of milk always went bad in my refrig. I would buy a dozen eggs and end up throwing away a few eggs left in the carton after a couple of months. Store bought chicken became just plain nasty tasting to me. When I cooked a store bought turkey, the kitchen smelled like manure. Beef had no flavor. I finally decided that I had had a enough, and ordered some baby chicks, loaded up my freezer during hunting season with venison and start raising a hog. In the years since, when I didn't keep my own animals, I bought the meats from friends who raised them on pasture, at times driving 3 hours one way to get a few months supply.
