From Weston Price: In 1935, the German researcher F. Thoenes put forward the hypothesis that vitamin D requires vitamin A in order to function, and that high doses of vitamin D cause toxicity by producing a state of relative vitamin A deficiency. Over 70 years later, molecular biologists have now proven at least the first part of his hypothesis correct. On August 25, 2006, a team of researchers from Spain and Germany published a report showing that 9-cis-retinoic acid, one of the hormonally active forms of vitamin A, is an essential factor for the full functioning of vitamin D. In the absence of 9-cis-retinoic acid, activated vitamin D and its receptor could only bind weakly to DNA and could therefore only exert a small effect on gene expression. When 9-cis-retinoic acid was available, however, it formed a large complex that included its own receptor, vitamin D, and the vitamin D receptor; this complex was able to bind to DNA very strongly and vitamin D was able to fulfill its full function. Most striking, the "defective" vitamin D receptor that is present in a genetic form of rickets that cannot ordinarily be cured by vitamin D became fully functional in the presence of 9-cis-retinoic acid.

If high doses of vitamin D use up vitamin A, they might leave less vitamin A for other important processes—one of those processes is preventing the calcification of kidneys, whether that calcification is induced by vitamin D or by some other means.

Whereas vitamins A and D act as hormones, communicating to cells which proteins they should make, vitamin K activates a select group of vitamin K-dependent proteins after they have already been made. (continues)

She cried when I combed her hair if the comb would touch her lower spine. This was of one year's duration. After reading about Vitamin D helping bone pain, I wondered if sunshine could help her. I thought, "How can an animal with thick fur get Vitamin D from the sun?" I think it was on the Vitamin D Council website that I read that cats make it in their fur and then ingest it by licking themselves!

I exchanged her grocery store dry food for a healthier diet 3 months ago and already her spinal pain seems to be gone. I am having a hard time getting her to go outside, though. She has always been scared of the outdoors due to a traumatic kittenhood.

So my doc prescribed megadoses of vitamin D. My testosterone levels were very low (144; 300 was low end of normal on this test, 900 for high end). So my doc prescribed testosterone patches. Some time shortly after that, it was found that I may have prostate cancer.

Does anyone know if it is unwise to take vitamin D supplementation with the diagnosis of prostate (or hormone sensitive) cancer? How about testosterone supplementation as Rx'd?

It seems to me that vitamin D is helpful at preventing cancer - but I am not sure about taking it AFTER you have it. Many people have been diagnosed with one form of cancer or another.

Comments? Dr. Mercola?

My daughter has also been drinking raw milk for a couple of years because of the research I've found with its help in fighting her hormonal cancer. This article explains very well why the combination of D3 and calcium work to destroy cancer cells and I would just like to let you all know that a recent CT scan of her spine and sacrum have shown no tumor growth at all since her last surgery 3 years ago. Hers was a malignant cancer in the spine and it metastisized to her sacrum (tailbone). It is a lifethreatening cancer and she is clear now of any cancer in her spine. Most people say it's a miracle, but the D3/raw milk treatment has been the only thing that has so far stopped her relentless tumor growth. Sorry to be so lengthy, but I hope this information can be passed on to someone who needs it. And, I want to thank Dr. Mercola for giving my daughter and family a future together. Our family is so (cautiously) excited about this.
