Type-o on the article above, I believe you meant to recommend Maca not Matcha...Maca is the adaptogenic root that has been used in Peru for many years. Matcha is a tea that also has many benefits but is different than Maca. I use both, I mix both with raw milk in the morning and have wonderful results both in maintaining a healthy reporductive system and great sustainable energy. I know they work because when I run out and don't have it I begin to feel the difference. By the way this whole attact on wholistic integrative medice comes from fear. When anyones behavior is motivated by the emotion of fear, it will always lead to the unveiling of universal truths that will always prevail. We have lived under a rock these past 100 years thinking that we would allow our government to didctate certain truths about who we are, how we behave and what we consume. Government didn't come into existance in our modern societies for this purpose. Those things have always been the responsibility of the people, when the people allow that responsibility to shift over to their government, they will always be dissapointed. Government by nature can not serve that purpose for us. We need to define our own purpose, one that serves the greater good of humanity. We need to have a complete paradigm shift in consciousness in order to affect the decisions of government and put them back to work for us, not for all these conglomarates. Afterall, as a whole, we pay government much more money than these companies pay to have their view accepted. If you consider the amnt of tax that we pay a whole, we represent a whole lot of money. We need a united front though, and this is where our challenges lie. People like Oprah promoting positive healing practices is a huge sign that we are reaching a tipping point with all of this. We need to have a forum where we can stand a united ground against all of these atrocities towards humanity...any suggestions?

The Pharmaceutical companies are just Legal Drug Pushers. I say that if your Doctor or Health Care Provider really cared and I mean really cared about you as a person as opposed to the kickbacks that they get from the pharmaceutical industry, then your Health Care provider would send you to the ends of the earth to get you healthy, no matter what.

I take several supplements and I know they work to heal the problem, not mask the pain or symtoms. Also the supplement chorella, one of the green algae, detoxifies the body. It help someone I know get rid of the HepC virus. The doctor wanted her to take the shots, rebetron which have very bad side effects. A lot of prople are going to aternative medicines due to the side effects of traditional drugs.

Dr. M, as a male you too are occasionally taking certain words for granted: I've never had a hot flash; the heat comes on quickly, but it is not a case of being cool or warm and in one second one is burning up. And it certainly does not go away in a flash! But I am really writing to welcome your discussion of the new onslaught on self-heath care, natural health care, the use of supplements of all kinds (vitamins, herbs, specific proteins and aminos). So little of my health care costs are covered by Medicare (though I was never given a real choice in whether to pay those taxes or not). I am making a big point with ALL of my representatives at every level that it's not just a question of being able to afford health insurance w/no exceptions for existing conditions at the time you sign up. It's a question of accepting that there's no such thing as "one size fits all" in heath care. So individually compounded hormones, and other supplements, and having accurate testing, such as specific blood work and hair analysis, is key to getting the correct formula for each individual. As to it being costly: what is the $ figure of lost productivity through sickness and generally less than optimum performance through never really being well? I don't recall ever seeing that looked at in any comprehensive way, just tokens now and then. Health is an active, vibrant state, not just the absence of actuall illness. And I recall that it seems every 8-10 years the FDA makes another effort to turn vitamins, herbs and, etc., into drugs available ONLY on a doctor's prescription, ONLY int he potencies the FDA decides. Its hypocritical statements that this is necessary to protect people from the dangers, etc., etc. You know the rest. Seems the FDA knows better what's best for patients than doctors! EVERYONE MUST WRITE. EM, CALL their reps, If enough of us do it, we WILL get s/thing better.

The problem with Suzanne Sommers is that she portrays these bioidentical hormones as an elixir of youth that Big Pharma vis a vis physicians is hiding from patients. What people don't realize is that there is a reason why the body stops producing these hormones, and adding them from an external source is not without risk of future repercussions. A good example of this is what we are seeing with the consumption of soy as an estrogen substitute. Soy was portrayed as a safe and natural alternative to treat menopausal vasomotor symptoms, and now we are starting to see some of the longterm consequences of regular soy use. The first question a woman must discuss with her healthcare provider is whether or not she is a candidate for any type of hormone replacement therapy, and then what individual benefits or risks would she derive from using hormones. Once the decision is made to proceed with treatment, then she can decide which type of therapy is most appropriate. The bigger problem is that, like with all aspects of our health care system, most people are looking for a magic pill to cure their ailments instead of making the tough lifestyle changes that they really need to make in order to maintain well-being.

I don't believe many of the things Big Pharma, not all but many, have anything to do with "curing" our illnesses. The primary and driving force is to provide a pharmaceutical solution to illness that will alleviate the symptom(s), not cure it, and keep the person taking "medicine" for the rest of their lives. I seem to remember a tax levied on cigarettes that would be used to develop a cure for cancer. Billions of dollars spent, there is no cure, change your diet, exercise, and don't smoke. Was any work really done on finding a cure?

I commend Oprah for having such an open mind about things...which contributes so much to her continued success. Does anyone remember Suzanne Somers on the Today Show a few years ago with the same message (granted I didn't see the Oprah episode mentioned but she was on the same trail) and they bashed her on the show for her beliefs. People always attack the new ideas and the threatening views of the few who are enlightened enough to share with those who may be receptive. Who cares about Newsweek anyway or the Today Show? They're just the propaganda puppets we've always hated but allowed in our space. And how can they promote their New World Order when the public is enlightened by these "wackos"?

Are you sending your comments to Oprah? When I saw this Newsweek article, the first thing I thought was that they are trying to smear her because she is a threat to the powers that be. I think I will write Oprah a letter and let her know how much I enjoy hearing about alternative health options. I also want to let her know that those of us who do our homework aren't likely to believe Newsweek when they try to slander her. It is interesting to me that the attacks are also coming in the tabloids. They attack her weight right and left. She obviously has some power and they don't like it.

The media is the problem with most of the news we receive. They are so biased on just about everything. Thanks to Oprah for bringing in differing opinions even though the media blasts her. Pharmacuical companies are way to big and if the public was aware of the alternatives we would not have as many people getting sick from some medications that the doctors are prescribing patients today. I do not take any medications and feel I am far healthier than most. The government is getting bigger and bigger which is not good for anything. Hooray for bio identical hormones and anything NATURAL.

ALL transdermal, topical estrogen(prescription) is purchased through 2 companies.

The compounding pharmacies purchase their 17- beta estradiol from the same companies that the pharmaceutical industry does. Transdermal estrogen is not made from Premarin.

The ESTHER trial showed that transdermal estrogen had 1/4 the blood clots of oral Estrogens. Transdermal estrogen is available, by prescription in gels, creams and patches and available in many of the same pharmacies who provide compounded estrogen.

Though I don't always agree with Oprah, I have really appreciated her efforts to bring alternative methods/medicine to her audience. Until recently, she had regular shows featuring Dr. Oz, a surgeon who advocates alternative medicine. Besides Oprah's advocacy of Suzanne Somers, her interviews with Eckhart Tolle also received criticism from the MSM.

I watched the show featuring Suzanne Somers, and was so impressed with what she had to say, I bought her new book "Breakthrough". I must say, it was an excellent read! In the book Suzanne talks about these accupressure patches she wears for sleep. I researched them, and have since been wearing the energy enhancer patches whenever the need arises. The pain management patches are a lifesaver for my friend who deals with endomitriosis. And there are no drugs in the patches whatsoever. It's just about accessing your meridian points.

Kudos for Suzanne and Oprah!

There was a comment earlier that Obama may be open to info in the area of supplements. Maybe so, but indications so far are not promising. His appointed FDA Chair has already proposed cutting off some supplements.

We have run into the problem of the New Golden Rule, "He who has the gold makes the rules."

As an unrestrained entity, Big Pharma is immensely profitable. They spend pennies on production and, free to set their own prices with no honest competition, they charge outrageous amounts for their products - more in the USA than anywhere else. They want to destroy the supplement industry because it cuts into their market, and they have the cash to do it. Look at all the ways that they use that cash.

They spend more on direct to customer advertising than they do on research. This buys off the print and electronic media and the mainstream medical journals, and also brainwashes the gullible public.

They finance studies by doctors who are willing to publish favorable drug results and/or negative supplement results, even if they have to discretely falsify some aspects of their to study, and even if those results are contrary to hundreds of other studies which positively prove otherwise.

They legitimize the prescribing practices of drug oriented doctors, who don't want to spend the time to learn about what really works, and give them all sorts of extra bonuses and goodies.

They own the FDA, staffing it, and financing it with their payments for new drug application tests, relieving some government funding problems.

They contribute heavily to political campaigns to assure that Congress will help them. The most dangerous people now are in charge of the House Health Committees: Henry Waxman and John Dingle. Both strong supporters of Big Pharma and opponents of supplements. They feel that they now have the chance to reverse the DSHEA ad kill the supplement industry.

Follow the money. Everybody profits, except for our health.
