It's said to heal all kinds of maladies - there's a huge amount of info on the web about it, including Wikipedia. There's quite a mythology, too. In China, where it's called Fo Ti Tieng, it is highly prized as a longevity herb, & stories are told of people who lived to well over 100 years due to eating a few leaves every day. Indians have the same belief. In Australia it was promoted as 'The Arthritis Herb' during the 80s, due to its anti-inflammatory properties. The Thais use it raw in salads or cooked in whatever, as a cooling herb. I throw a few leaves into my banana smoothies (which I make with sesame milk - grind half a cup of sesame seeds in the coffee grinder until gluggy, throw into a blender with a pint of water, a heaped t-spoon of tumeric & 2 or 3 bananas. Delicious! Sometimes I use a tablespoon of wild jungle honey also.) Many herbal sites sell the dried herb as a tea. Don't overdo it, though - it can be toxic if you have too much. Do a bit of reading first. If you can get it fresh, use the stalks as well. It's very easy to grow - likes a lot of water & semi-shade.

Re, tumeric - it's a food preservative. I always put some into my guacamole. It stops it from going brown on top if I only eat half & store the rest in the fridge for a day. I use the fresh root, which looks a bit like ginger, only thinner & yellow-to-orange. I always get the darkest coloured root I can find in my local market. The pure powder's fine, though. Keep in a dark place.

Maybe some of this could be helpful.

This company has organic gotu kola

www.mountainroseherbs.com/.../search.php

The following two links are to Nutsonline -- I like them, they have fast shipping time, and fantastic service. A family business for generations, upbeat cheerful and fun attitude. Nice company to do business with.

www.nutsonline.com/.../kola.html

I like their 'organic' page:

www.nutsonline.com/search_results.html

Another company's webpage mentions that gotu kola is used to prevent senility, but then they also show that it is high in aluminum (hmmm....)

www.morethanalive.com/Gotu-Kola-herb-cut

San Francisco Herb & Natural Food Co. has a wide variety of bulk herbs in whole dried leaf form as well as cut and powdered forms. I work in a small health food store that carries their products, plus I've bought the herbs online from them. Here's a link to their website.

http://www.herbspicetea.com/

Also, gotu kola is sold in capsule form by Nature's Way in health food stores.

The last lot were growing like reindeers antlers , in every nook & cranny....& I never felt them being passed. I had been in hospital staying up till 4am (several nights)...with a group of others discussing the world events, continuiously supping the water (& smoking) .....Had I not walked in on the Dr discussing the amazing situation with 2 other Drs.... I had a strong feeling he wasnt going to tell me there was nothing to remove..it had all gone.

Frankly I have always wondered if the polio injection I recieved in the 50s was the trigger of these stones, my & only health problem. I certainly made sure none of my 5 children were never subjected to any kind of vaccination. Four are in their 40s & never had kidney stones. The moment you feel the discomfort in the back area, get straight to the water. I prefer my coffee but its worth it. At the hospital we were outside or I may have been supping coffee & would never have discovered this. The only time I was in the hospital was for the meals. It was the loveliest holiday I ever had, with a great bunch of people & yes they possibly were cheesed off with my constant disappearance. On the other hand I was no problem to them & they were a great bunch of nurses.

I suggest a previously stated by other posted messages to "Take the pain" and let the stone pass. You can help the stone to pass by drinking all the liquids you can swallow, I prefer Beer, and plenty of it it helps numb the pain and makes you urinate which is the best cure. There is non-alchol beer for those you do not want alchol.

It takes a couple of kidney stones and a trip to the hospital, to make a a person understand that going to the hospital is the last choice.

I have a book "Let's get Well" by the American nutritionist Adele Davis, in which there was a chapter on "How to dissolve kidney stones". Simply magnesum ( capsule or teaspoonful of powder) and Vit B6 50 mgm daily. Within three weeks, I passed the stone. When presented to the consultant, there was no reaction. Probably afraid he would lose customers if he recommeded this treatment. I take the treatment on a regular basis and have been stone free since.

I've visited urologists who've only READ and HEARD about kidney stones--I won't visit them again, in a hurry, but they CAN prescribe pain-killers, so...in an emergency, there's no argument from me. As for the 'advice' here, I say: "Show me the Science--PLEASE!"

My brother-in-law, a cardiac surgeon, whose opinions I respect greatly, passed a stone more than twice the size of the largest stone I have ever passed. [RESPECT!] He has access to a huge range of medical colleagues, but he knows about as much as I do about stone-formation, prevention and alleviation. (We both agree that Morphine is good for killing the pain.)

My dad had kidney stones and so do I. I have 2 brothers who've never experienced 'real' pain in their lives...because they aren't (or don't seem to be) 'stone-formers'.

It's the 'urethral' stones that cause the indescribable pain. That's just 'fancy talk' for a kidney stone 'on the move'. Doctors really don't know how or why stones form in humans or other animals. All they really know is that some individual animals form them, then try to pass them and that they "seem" to hurt like crazy. The doctors are quite correct.

All the 'folk wisdom' and all the 'medical wisdom' in the world, combined, says: "You cannot eat or drink ANYTHING" if you want to prevent kidney stones. That's quite true. You die, and you don't form stones, so they never pass and you don't have any pain. That isn't very helpful, though. Most terrestrial mammals (cats, dogs, horses, humans, bears, deer, etc, anyway...) seem to form stones. When they enter the urethra, most animals stop eating and drinking and drop dead.

If you have a 'cure', please show me where to read the scientific papers. Every doctor, every mother, every citizen has a hypothesis. When YOU pass a stone, you'll know why I ask!

Apparently she had an allergic reaction to the the anasthesia which was ignored even though she had problems with blood circulation to her legs on the initial round of treatment.

Reminds me that PREVENTION is the SAFEST treatment.

I am a middle-aged male, living in the 'Kidney Stone Belt' in Florida. I am the heaviest sweater that I know. I am a competetive cyclist, a part-time runner and martial artist. I have three friends who have had kidney stones.

As a reformed sugar addict, I hope that the past several years worth of dietary detoxes, and the daily lemon in warm water will offer me some protection. I drink gallons of water, and look like a bizarre camel on bike rides.

Supplementation with Magnesium, under doctors orders, has helped me with muscle spasms in my back and hopefully will balance my mineral intake.

Malaysians and Indonesians use daun penggaga or pegaga leaf tea for acute attacks and prevention. It is called gotu kola here and the extracts and teas work fine. There are many other benefits to taking a cup of this tea once a month or so. Gets rid of the crud in that system just fine.

I was first put onto this by expats who have a contempt for much local medicine.

I have fearfully given a bit to my *** cat with this problem and he quickly went back to normal urination. The Asians say that cats seek this grass that grows wild in the local garden. When humans eat it raw it makes them very dizzy. We need to dry it first.
