Check out Slanker's Grass-Fed Meats, RR2, Box 175, Powderly, TX.

Their ranch is a lovely Red River Valley spread, 2 mi. from Red River. All their animals are grass fed. No anti-biotics. NO GRAIN. Their beef is fabulous. I do not work for them. I am a customer living in Paris, TX about 15 miles from their beautiful ranch. They also sell free range chickens, goats, etc. and ship all over the country. Their motto: Helping change the way America eats. These are really good honest reliable people.

Politicians, bureaucrats, and corporations. How do you find someone to deal with that you can trust?

I think I've found the best of both worlds. Early this year I searched the internet for a source of grass fed meat. I think I hit the jackpot first time. Slankers Grass Fed is a family operation in Texas. You order only by phone so I've already talked to 3 family members, and I trust them. They have great variety, (in season). Beef, buffalo, goat, pork, lamb, chickens, turkeys, plus raw milk cheeses and dog & cat food. They use a local certified butcher to give you just the cuts you want, and ship it frozen to your door. I'm sure there are other farmers out there doing much the same. Check them out. I eat mostly ground beef, raw. Great stuff, but not a good idea if you don't trust your source.

I had never thought of let alone encountered grain fed meat. It was only a couple of years ago that I first saw grain fed meat in a supermarket. Yes, it was proudly labelled as grain fed. I only bought it once. The meat was terrible. Tough and tasteless

..

About 4 years ago I saw a program on television about a way that livestock could be both grass fed and raised in a feed lot situation.

How this worked was to grow grass hydoponically then feed the livestock with the resulting grass. It takes about a week for the grass to grow sufficiently to be feed.

Using this method all the livestock is technically grass fed even if the livestock has never seen an open paddock much less known what it is like to graze freely.

The only ones that will remain are the big corporations and they will be able to raise the animals on dirt for half the year, feeding hay instead of corn if they choose to do so, based on the information in the article that you referenced. Our livestock is on pasture 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. They do get hay from about January till March, but they are still on pasture and they will eat what still manages to grow. They are not confined to a small area that turns into a muddy mess. They get no antibiotics, hormones or even chemical wormers. We don't use artificial fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides on our land, but the term organic is out of our reach as a small farmer. I'd like to be able to continue to call my animals grass fed without costly government interference.

The term organic is now pretty much meaningless and getting worse by the day. As a small farmer, it isn't worth the expense and hassle to go through the USDA certification process, so I can't call my produce organic unless I only sell less than $1000 per year. The organic certification process means small guys lose and big corporations get to take over the market. The same thing will happen to the term grass fed if the USDA is involved.

re: At Last, New Rules Set for Grass-Fed Meat

Crazy world.....in which more people understand the crucial importance of what we feed animals.....but not it appears, what they consume as a human animal !!
If all animals, including us, only ate what nature designed us to, many health issues would disappear...
...and if we eat animals that have consumed the same kind of bad carbs that compromise our health, then we have the wonderful situation of unhealthy people...eating unhealthy animals.
