First off, I would like to thank Dr. Mercola for taking the time to find out more on Thanksgiving. I (being Native American) have never understood why we have just one day, where people stuff themselves with food and claim that we are giving thanks to God. We need to thank him every day for the food we have. As for having family and friends over for just this one day, what's wrong with what people used to do. Go to a park or picnic site and have your family and friends there any time of the year. We don't need just one day to be thankful for them either. We always need our family and friends.

Secondly, I do know that when the Pilgrims came here, they had no choice but to bring a lot of people that were in prisons. Those people were given a choice - Death or the long trip here. Not much of a choice for some who died anyways.

Thirdly, I think that a lot of the comments that have been made here are beyond the point that Dr. Mercola was making. It wasn't to argue about religion or governments or things of that nature. He was trying to let us know that the Fairy Tale of Thanksgiving wasn't truthful. As far as that goes, a lot of the holidays are misrepresented by Fairy Tales, but I won't go into that.

I would like to close saying that we need to be thankful every day for the food we have, the clothes and homes we have and for our family and friends. We don't need just one day to be thankful!

This smear of socialism must not be unanswered. Of course socialism is toxic when corrupted, but so is unrestrained captialism. And the Puritans that survived Plymouth demonstrated how toxic capitalism is when combined with a God compelled drive to conquer and kill anyone in the way of law and order.

In the Connecticut Valley, the powerful Pequot tribe had not entered an alliance with the British (as had the Narragansett, the Wampanoag, and the Massachusetts peoples). At first they were far from the centers of colonization. Then, in 1633, the British stole the land where the city of Hartford now sits--land which the Pequot had recently conquered from another tribe. That same year two British slave raiders were killed. The colonists demanded that the Indians who killed the slavers be turned over. The Pequot refused.

The colonist army surrounded a fortified Pequot village on the Mystic River. At sunrise, as the inhabitants slept, the Puritan soldiers set the village on fire.

The indians, with whom the settlers co-existed for nearly 200 years, had a successful communal agriculture. Wonder why the settlers didn't pick up on that, and chose instead to mimic the European hierarchy they escaped from.....?

As a home schooling parent, I must tell you that in k - 3rd grade my kids learned the happy little story, but in the upper grades they did read about the greed & laziness of some colonists. And we read it out of a Christian curriculum!! See, Christians are not afraid of truth.........we ought to be humble enough to admit our failures and pray we don't repeat the bad. I personally do not think real christians were lazy cuz the Bible talks so much about hard work. The Bible promises poverty to the slothful. We reap what we sow.

Guilt feelings about us killing the Indians...about the Indians killing us...about us killing women and children in Iraq...about us raping and plundering other nations. Guilt feelings over how our government supposedly taxes the poor and gives millions to flagless corporations, etc, etc, etc, and YET how many of you feel any guilt about the thousands of aborted babies we in this country call choice?

You have every right to believe this, but when you post to a public forum that the Native Americans were somehow damned because they didn't accept Jesus (I infer that you're implying that they deserve what they got) if really offensive. You're excusing genocide in the name of religion - your religion. That's about as bad as it gets in this world."

Your condemnation of Christianity is just as hateful and spiteful. You claim to care for your fellow man, which fellow man is that? I expected to find good feelings and abundant good cheer on this list and instead find old resentments being dredged up once again. It seems that you simply cannot escape racism, politics, hate-mongering, geopolitics and cultural biases no matter where you go. All peoples were subjugated at one time or another throughout history, often by their own. The word "slave" comes from "Slav" and it is not a specific racial or cultural phenomenon so let's get that straight first and foremost. No one "owns" enslavement or torture, there's plenty of blame to go around for all of us. Hatred and resentment are emotions that divide not unite and are certainly detrimental to higher consciousness and good health. We would do much better to veer our thoughts in a more positive light towards one another and learn from the past rather than relive it. I personally am grateful for any holiday which brings my family together in good spirits and bountyand which allows us to put aside our differences (of which there will always be many ) and be generous with one another in spite of these differences. Dr.Mercola I must disagree with your statement on socialism helping the U.S. to recover from the great depression. The new deal not work. What brought and end to it was the demand by battling counties in Europe for products they needed to fight with, also material, and foodstuffs they could no longer produce on there own. In relation to the article, although some of the points made about misconceptions of Thanksgiving are certainly correct. I feel the article posted and title chosen by Dr Mecola was poor taste and although it may be correct in form it is certainly incorrect in substance.

Why? To say Thanksgiving is an altogether hoax is proven incorrect. Even if thanksgiving was perpetuated on a half truth and continued unfortunately by twisted individuals does not takeaway from the substance of men choosing to take a day to give thanks to God for His blessings. If you read the book that this article quotes Bradford's History "of Plimoth Plantation.": You will find Bradford and his constituents either by his writing or letters sent between themselves regularly giving thanks to God.

The article also itself take quotes and twists them for the authors’ case. For Instance quote article "In the harvest feasts of 1621 and 1622, "all had their hungry bellies filled," but only briefly." When Bradford qoutes in 1621 on page 127, "And thus they found the Lord to be with them in all their ways, and to bless their outgoings and incomings, for which let his holy name have the praise for ever, to all posterity. They began now to gather in the small harvest they had, and to fit up their houses and dwellings against the winter, being al well recoveredin helth and strength, and had al things in good plenty; for as some were thus employed in affairs abroad, others were exercised in fishing, about cod, and bass, and other fish, of which they took good store, of which every family had their portion. All the summer there was no want. And now began too come in store of fowl, as winter approached, of which this place did abound when they came first (but afterward decreased by degrees). And besides the water fowl, there was a great store of wild turkeys, of which they took many, besides venison, etc." books.google.com/books
