Have you thought about the link between the current abstinence teachings in the schools and rise in chlamydia?

Make kids scared of condoms = rise in STDs. That seems like a more reasonable equation to me.

Good to know that Mercola is against birth control in young women. I'm going to unsubscribe. Too bad, but I'm most definitely not supporting people who undermine women's health by bashing contraceptives of any form (condoms, birth control, IUD, etc.)

Being a virgin really isnt that hard.Though, the funny thing is- people actually make you feel weird for being a virgin. I work in a hotel in a very professional environment- but the subject of sex is ALWAYS being tossed around. And, initially, i had made it very clear to everyone that im a virgin- and my co-workers were in a state of shock!. So now..im known as the "virgin" at my workplace- which, really doesnt bother me actually. Infact im very proud. I really think that it boils down to who you are as a person and what morals you have. Its not about religion..or faith. Its all about MORALS! I consider myself to have strong morals, and i .and i have frreinds that arent virgins- but im never really tempted- im too proud of who i am.

In my opinion- abstinence was never really a option presented in sex-ed during highschool. I remember we were shown contraceptives, condoms, spermicides in highschool- but abstinence was NEVER presented as an option!

Aren't we living in a country that supposedly guarantees freedom of religion (or has that right been taken away too)? Please don't try to force religion on anyone, and maybe with open minds we'll all find a little more peace because it's easier to get along with one's neighbor when you respect different belief systems.

I must repeat because it was said so well.

Freedom is one thing... freedom from personal responsibility is something altogether different.

I have 2 teenagers, girls, whom I've been raised as Christians. They know that I cannot be their friend and be an effective parent as well. Although I and their Step Dad have fun with them, yes, they call us weird, but they are respectful. We talk about EVERYHING...nothing is forbidden. We are all very upfront and open with each other. I am not ashamed to say that I teach abstinence. I am not ashamed to say that teaching begins in the home. I am not ashamed to say that children want structure and something to believe in. I am not ashamed to say that I wish my parents taught me how to be a Christian, but I am.. I am not ashamed to say that as the family disintingrates so do the children. They are wonderful teenagers (as are all children) and all of their friends say to them...I wish our parents were more like yours. My two girls are very proud of this and they know and practice right from wrong. We devise a way to make it fun at home and keep them more at home, with their friends, than off somewhere to be tempted by peer pressures. Yes, peer pressure exists, but parents have to be active in their children lives and not leave it up to the newest technologies...this includes most TV programs. Thanks for your time.

Simply telling kids to abstain is not going to solve anything - all it will do is push up the STD rate as uninformed kids fall to their natural instincts. The Bush admin is proving this for us.

Abstinence works till it doesn't. Many kids claim they're abstinent but fudge it by saying that anal and oral sex don't count.

The real problem in our society is materialism, not rampant over-sexuality.

I carry both Herpes 1 and 2.....

Acquired Herpes 1 as a very small child...Herpes 2 from my first BF as a late teenager. Had to have a Cesarean for my first child because of the fear that she would get it from me. When I got this (in the 70"s) the information about the virus was limited...I didn't even know what the "heat rash" was until I was pregnant with my first child.

The big issue about herpes is that there is a HUGE stigma held over the heads of those of us who have it - by people who often have NOT been tested themselves and who have a 85% chance of carrying Herpes 1 or 2. Why?????

BECAUSE WHEN YOU ARE TESTED FOR STD's THEY ONLY TEST FOR SYPHILIS, GONNORHEA, AND AIDS....NOT CHLAMYDIA, HERPES, OR HPV.......

The first way to slow the spread of the diseases is to EDUCATE and TEST for them all EVERY time you have a STD test. Most people THINK that they have been tested for all the diseases when in fact they have not been.

And given that Herpes 1 can be transferred to the genitals via oral sex (and visa versa)...as well as the fact that you can pass it on even when using a condom through asymptomatic shedding (ie, with no sores present)...and that Herpes can cause birth defects and death in a newborn baby.... means that we should be paying more attention to proper testing and education.

And on top of this....the total devastation that people feel when they are diagnosed with Herpes is huge...to the point that many feel like lepers, untouchable.......or even worse, suicidal. And given that 55% of the population has Herpes 2 and 85% of them don't even know that they have it...well, we will never stop the spread until we become proactive in the area of STD testing.....
