Researchers tested saline sprays (which squirt saline solution into the nostrils) against saline irrigation, a more rigorous nasal cleaning process.
i was plagued with sinus infections for years, and took allergy pills and prescription nose sprays (antihistimine and corticosteroid). i had sinus infections, tonsillitis, bronchial infections, ear infections... it was a constant struggle. i also had 2 sinus surgeries at the advisement of "one the top sinus dr in nyc", but still had trouble. I found that if i was pro-active with taking meds and rinsing (i used a water-pik system with grossen tip with a solution of 1tsp baking soda and 2 tsp sea salt), i got fewer infections and was happy with that progress, but still got infections. i was tired of all the medicine over th epast 15years, then also had trouble with my thyroid and skin so turned to a naturopath. then, while working with my naturopathic dr we discovered that i had a sensitivity to wheat and sulfites. in general the level of inflammation in my system was high. once i cut this out, i was able to stop the prescription meds, replacing them with quercetin, bromelain, and a quercetin natural nose spray. its been almost 2 years and i feel SO much better.

I rinsed my sinuses because they felt stuffy one afternoon. I used water or maybe a salt solution (don't remember exactly what) and a number of hours later developed a very major sore throat and high fever. I am sure it was because of flushing out some infectious material that got caught in my throat as I never get sore throats.

Years later then I tried rinsing with a herbal solution and a water pik on gentle and made sure everything was rinsed clear especially my throat. Then no problem.

tried every paid med under the sun and nothing. good thing while lying in bed i remember a little peice i read on hydrogen peroxide and throat infections.

i made a 1% solution with distlled water, and kept spraying in each nostril untill i felt a little drip down my throat.

it burned.

2 minutes later, a huge amount of "hidden" mucus apppeard when i blow my nose.

3 minutes after that, no pain, no tenderness. NOTHING!

it still blows my mind when so many of my friends(except one) refuse this treatment, even after seeing my other friend getting cured by this in 10 minutes.

Soak the end of a cotton bud and very gently insert into your nasal/sinus passages and clean with twisting motion - use a freshly soaked cotton bud for each area. You can go as far you like without damage if you're gentle - you can also clean well into the nasal passage towards the throat. Blow your nose with a clean tissue at this stage. And finally, with your head right back, dribble the liquid with a teaspoon into one nostril at a time -it flushes through to the throat - I finish up the remainder in the glass, by gargling and swilling out my mouth. Finally blow you nose with a tissue to remove the residue. In many cases I have found that this stops an infection in its tracks. Lubricating your passages with a cotton bud dipped into a small amount of coconut oil is a good way to finish up.

An ear nose and throat specialist said I needed surgery to drain my sinus cavity of the trapped mucus and infection. Not knowing any better I had the surgery because I was tired of suffering. The pain I experienced after the surgery was horrifing. I would have shot myself had I a gun. After the surgery the Dr. told me to use a water pic with a nasal attachment to irrigate my sinus cavity. I was surprised at what was flushed out, in part due to the surgery. I had to go back for follow up visits. It wasn't two months when I went back, experiencing the same symptoms as before the surgery, when the Dr. said the passages were closing again so he reached up inside my nose with a long thin instrument. I passed out because of the pain. The Dr. had to raise the chair high enough for blood to rush to my head and use smelling salt to awaken me. It was less than a year later that I was suffering once again, so much for surgery. I then did research and found the reason antibiotic's seem like they work is because they help shrink the swelling. Sinus infections live on the surface of the sinus wall and not in the blood stream, Had they lived in the blood stream the antibiotic would kill them. The only way to rid the body of the infection is to irrigate the sinus cavity and flush it away. I use a nasal attachment for my water pic with a water, salt, and peroxide solution and have been feeling fine.
