When I'm at work (in a professional office), I take a paper towel with me, after washing my hands with warm water and soap, and use it towel to grasp the door handles on the way back to my desk. In addition, and as supported by prior comments, a strong immune system is paramount. Dr. Mercola is right on the mark with his nutrition and rest advice (especially about essential nutrients, fish oil and sunlight). Don't forget your probotics because your gut (immune system) is happier with a continuing supply.

When I go to the bathroom, I usually just "rinse" them. On the weekends, when I work on my yard or my cars(oil changes, etc); then I do wash them with dish soap; I usually snack(in between meals) on fruits and/or nuts without washing my hands; many times I will also play with my dog. I'm rarely sick! I used to catch a cold about once a year but that has pretty much stopped in the past 4 years or so. I have a water pump that provides all of our daily water needs; though, lately i've been looking at getting a water filter to take out the sediment that it's in my water; but otherwise, this is what I've been drinking for the past 8 years or so. Forgot to mention, the only time I've been in a hospital, was a few years back I broke my ankle and had to have emergency surgery to put it back together(I really did a number on it). Otherwise, don't suffer from any ailments and am 46 years old.

People will quote a study that states transmission of disease is reduced in the presence of waterless hand soap, but what they fail to remember is the reason for waterless soap's success is health care workers are more compliant using waterless soap than old fashioned soap and water.

I am exposed to at least 30 women per day, where at least half of them already have children--snot-nosed, nose-picking, coughing-without-covering-their-mouths, children, lol! Let's face it. Kids are a big source of germs getting passed around because they are just not hygienic.

I wash my hands incessantly because I'm always afraid of catching something and getting sick. Then my whole staff would get sick, which is horrible for a boutique-sized store.

So I'd rather have dry, dishpan hands than be sick for a month with bronchitis, aggravated that my staff catches it. Then they get sick, and then while I'm still sick trying to recover from being sick I have to deal with working OVERTIME because my staff is calling out, when the best thing for me to do is really take it easy and rest.

I don't get the idea of not using an anti-bacterial soap or wipes though. When you're dealing with the public in a service industry, you're exposure is so much higher. I want to use every form of defense during this time of year.

So what's a good hand lotion?

re: Share a Kiss, But Don't Shake Hands

Instead of using paper towels or sharing the same hand towel with everyone in your household and guests, I have color coordinated everyone in my household for their own bathtowels, hand towels and even the dish towels in the kitchen. I buy enough towels that I change them out at least every other day unless they get soiled quicker. Mine gets thrown in the laundry basket daily, as I use it mine the most. If you have a large family, perhaps you could have 2 people sharing towels. I wouldn't mind sharing with my spouse and maybe the son's could share a towel and the daughters share a towel. It's a choice you have to make in your own home, of course. Personally, I hand guests paper towels, but you could even have a special towel just for guests.

I do not use bleach for anything except for this - The first weekend of each month I put about a half a cup of bleach in my toilet tanks and fill up each sink in my home and add maybe a 1/4 cup of bleach up to the rim. I let it sit for a few minutes then flush the toilets, rinse the sinks and then scrub the sinks and toilets with baking soda afterwards. If someone knows something better to use than bleach, please let me know. I don't know of anything that kills germs and bacteria as well as bleach, but hate using it, knowing how toxic it is.

I work in a hospital and wash my hands often, so I keep a natural lotion in my desk drawer and use that often as well as wear gloves once or twice a week at night while sleeping with lotions slathered on my hands.

I hope these tips were helpful!
