Some years ago the North Sea was photographed to show an enormous flow of heavy industrial toxins and waste from the River Rhine; Germany.

This pollution has affected all life in the North Sea; hence we do not purchase any fish caught in that region.

We purchase Icelandic caught fish; Cod, Halibut, Mackeral. Mackeral was known as a fish that ate anything in the sea; rubbish, yet it is recommended as one of the oily fish to consume; I wonder why ?

You asked if there were any plant based sources of DHA & EPA. Yes there is. This is the one we buy - http://www.water4.net/.

"Omega-3, EPA & DHA doesn't come from fish, it comes from algae, the food they eat. V-Pure is a highly concentrated and 100% toxic free, organic source Omega-3 from a sustainable resource. It's also the only vegetarian omega-3 in the world with both EPA & DHA. "

I think that there is confusion on the subject of oils, man is a warm bloodied animal, at our body temperature vegetable & fish oils rapidly oxidise & promote inflamation. We are designed to eat fats (oils) that have a much higher melting point i.e .animal fats. I remember a television program here in NZ on "healthy" eating throwing a packet of lard around to shew the dangers of saturated fat, but in our bodies solid animal fats are liquid, the very structure of our cells is only whole when made up of proper fats suitable for our body temperature. Diseases such as diabeties are caused by our cells being unable to synthesize insulin because vegetable oils are akien to our structure.

The best source of omega 3 oils is grass fed meat.

KRILL OIL - at what cost?

Sure, it is possible to harvest and squeeze the oil from these tiny ocean creatures and it might even be really healthy, but at what cost? Not the monetary cost, which seems to be the primary concern of certain well-paid scientists and businessmen, certain doctors, and, thus, consumers. I'm talking about the environmental costs. What impact does consuming krill oil have on the environment?

Humans are depleting the oceans of life at an alarming rate, much beyond legal 'allowances' and 'restrictions', and with methods of harvesting that are devastating to the entire habitat and food chain, greatly reducing ocean diversity and sustainability. There are many studies that have proven it unhealthy to eat significant amounts of the larger marine predators because of toxic levels of mercury as well as other harmful heavy metals and chemicals concentrated in their flesh, so now we (at the top of the food chain) are targeting some of the smallest species. Do a little research and you'll read that the populations of planktons and krill have decreased significantly in the last two decades (which, many scientists conclude, is largely due to increasing ocean temperatures and pollution), and these tiny creatures are the primary source of food for many species of fish as well as a great number of other species: Whales, seals, penguins, sea birds, to name a few...

Despite this knowledge and the warnings of marine biologists, certain individuals have ordered fishing fleets, equipped with large, tightly woven nets, to harvest the already dwindling population of krill and press them for their precious oils because this 'supplement' to the human diet has been determined to increase health and longevity. But at what cost?

Questions:

1) Is it ethical for humans to consume krill oil when so many other species are standing in line before us?

2) Is there an ethical alternative?
