I just have to step on a scale within a few hours of eating and there will be an instant weight gain of about four pounds. The weight increase is due to water retention, so it's gone by the next day, but I hate the idea that I put that poison unknowingly in my body. Thank heaven for detox programs!

There's a bill in Congress to require labeling. I hope you will join me. Labeling is a common sense way to let us all decide what kind of food we want on our family's table.

I also can't help but want to roll my eyes a bit at the list of other ingredients that contain MSG - after all, the article is about MSG in Chinese food, which especially in mid- and low-end joints is going to be the added processed powder. To implicate the potential MSG content of gelatin, carrageenan, soy sauce, vegetable gums, soy protein, and whey protein (as a by-product of these ingredients' creation) in the same way as the subject of the article concerning cancer seems a bit of a stretch. At the very least, gelatin (as from animal bones used for stocks), carrageenan, and soy sauce have been eaten by various peoples for far longer than just the last century, so again, I'm dubious of putting them under the "MSG=stomach cancer" banner.

Ramen noodles, and canned soups, even the "Healthy Request" by Campbells that SAYS it has no MSG. Trust me, it does. Many things that don't list MSG do affect him, because it is deceptively labeled. It is frustrating. On the other hand, we always ask when we go to a Chinese restarant, and most local places tell me they don't use MSG, and my son does fine. About the only processed food he does ok with is frozen pizza. The only pizza he's ever reacted to is Pizza Hut. He cannot eat at Chick-Fil-A even though they say no MSG. Mexican restaraunts don't present problems. He loves Alfredo noodles, but they are a toss-up - some places are fine, others aren't.

MSG is also in most vaccines. We stopped getting them several years ago, but interestingly as a baby he reacted twice to vaccines.

My husband is severely sensitive to MSG... took him years of tracking everything he ate and looking at all the ingredients to figure it out. We now cook from scratch, avoiding all additives. Now they are fertilizing foods with MSG... anything for a buck.

An accidental exposure puts him in bed for a day or two with the symptoms of having the flu, or maybe a bad hangover (except he doesn't drink), migraine headache or a case of food poisoning....

Stop and think about that for a minute... The FDA acknowledges that 20 percent of the American Public have bad reactions to MSG. How many people have thought they have had any of the above health issues when what was actually causing their problem was MSG?

Individuals who claim MSG is not a toxin and doesn't affect people are quite simply ignorant. People who ARE affected by MSG and KNOW it are careful as they can be and can still get hammered once in awhile. It's in medicines.

People who know they are sensitive are the canaries in the coal mine.... they are the lucky ones, because they know the damage MSG causes and can avoid it.

While the rest of humanity keeps on gobbling down prepared foods until they manage to give themselves dementia or cancer.

Incidentally, the person who discovered Chinese Restaurant Syndrome was a Korean Doctor, he noticed that he had reactions when he ate in NY Chinese Restaurants... The two Koreas have different food preparation methods, one doesnt use MSG. So the Dr started questioning ill people in the emergency room... he found out they had consumed MSG.

The Japanese discovered MSG, created it artifically and sell tons annually. Stomach cancer is one of the biggest killers in Japan... one huge health issue and it sounds like it comes from MSG doesn't it?

Does anyone know if MSG is snuck into, or present in say, Organic products like rice or almond milk, tomatoe sauce, etc.?

Secondly, what about malted barley? This product, used by us homebrewers as well as commercial brewers, is made by merely sprouting barley grains, then baking them in ovens at various temperatures for different amounts of time. Since nothing is added to the grains, where does the MSG come from?

I wonder if naturally occurring glutamate in these foods is being confused with MSG additives.

Today, one really has to be responsible for their own health and welfare. The established systems won't and maybe can not. Be ever vigelant and remember the words of Voltaire, "It is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong".

I had an e-mail sent to me about a study that was done regarding obesity in America. Of course, they use rats for this study, although the problem first was that rats are not obese by nature, so they fed them MSG to get them obese!!!!

I’m learning more and more about the toxicity of magnesium stearate and stearic acid, and they’re in just about every supplement on the market. Here’s a copy & paste from a web site I found that sells products that don’t contain either of those. I’m not connected to this company, just passing along this information:

Check your vitamin labels. Do they contain Magnesium Stearate or Stearic Acid? Studies by the University of Texas Health Science Center and the East Carolina University School of Medicine reveal that these toxic excipients cause a rapid collapse of T-cell membrane function and cell death; therefore suppressing the immune system. (Immunology, 1990, Jul.)

It is estimated that 90% of the vitamin and mineral products consumed today contain stearates. Stearates are used as binders in tablets and in the processing of gelatin capsules. Consumers often take handfuls of capsules and tablets to get vitamins, minerals and other key nutrients from supplements that contain stearates, and instead, in reality, get a powerful immune suppressive treatment.

For more information on this topic and copies of the above-quoted studies as well as other studies and warnings concerning stearates, send an email to service@qnlabs.com.

"The public must be more aware of nutritional products that initially bring a good vitamin or mineral but hurt you in other ways." (Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, Commissioner - Texas Department of Health, speaking before the Texas Strategic Health Partnership,

University of Texas, Sept. 25, 2003)
