This is my first participation. Appreciate all the intersting comments and recipes. For more information look up a book by herbalist Paul Schulick GINGER- Common Spice and Wonder Drug,Hohm Press, Third Edition. It gives some history and chemical properties, [about 400 compounds] and means of action . There are four categories - fresh rhizome, dried [powder], syruped candy and extracts and and describes how best to use each. Regarding the Ginger -Honey Syrup mentioned by Vicki Marie -the recipe is one part of fresh ginger[peeled], grated or juiced- added to 3 parts of honey. This is to be refrigerated. Add one to two teaspoons of this honey - ginger syrup to 8oz of carbonated or hot water, or use as dessert topping. Another excellent use of fresh and powdered ginger is externally as a compress for sinusitis, headache, chest colds, muscle sprains, and joint pain. You can also fill empty capsules with powdered ginger [preferably organic] if you don' t like the taste of the fresh , and take after a meal to help with digestion., and to avoid the burning sesation. However, it is best to use both the fresh and dried form since they have different therapeutic benefits.

Synthetic hormone replacement or HRT, environmental foreign estrogens, and birth control pills are all contributing factors to the various cancers which plague women. Since I personally started using BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES , for now being natural progesterone and natural testosterone, my reproductive and overall health and well-being have never been better. (I am 49 and have suffered from severe PMS for some 25 years). I did the research and rather agree to the standard of care, being snthetic HRT and prozac, I found out about natural hormone replacement. Now I have no need to worry about fibroid tumors, no more PMS, no more irritability and depression, no more hair loss, no more insomnia, my sex life is back on track, I have a decreased risk for the various female cancers now as well as heart attack and stroke, and I'm naturally rebuilding bone. No one will ever convince me that bioidentical hormones are not what a woman's body needs to stay healthy because I am living proof of it. Bioidentical hormones are the key to a woman's wellbeing, (they've been used in Europe for decades and the research is available) and of course proper diet and exercise are of paramount importance as well.

Dr. Mercola, I so much appreciate your articles and wisdom, but please differentiate between natural and synthetic hormones when you refer to hormone therapy in your articles. There is a world of difference between the two, one being deadly (and promoted by big Pharma) and the other being natural and very beneficial to women's health in so many ways that diet and exercise alone can not address.

I usually cut small pieces up and give to my mum for her arthritic pain. Within an hour, she says that the pain eases.

An interesting Jamaican Drink which might give you a double whammy fighting chance against Cancer is Sorrell mixed with Ginger.

Sorrell is drunk at Christmas time in Jamaica and in copious amounts - its a rich warm drink (well cold actually but it makes you feel warm).

Dry sorrel is put in water to seep for about a day with ground ginger and rum (rum is optional). The liquid is poured out and ice added. Quite nice. Oh it can also be made into a tea (I've never tried it myself but it should be pleasant).

Research in Jamaica has shown that cancer cells when exposed to Sorrel just withered and died. Pretty remarkable actually. And to think that we've been mixing these two cancer-fighting agents together!

Every so often though, I still get them, and in keeping track of the conditions, I realized that I tend to have a "nervous stomach"...stress (and I'm assuming blood flow) goes right to that part of my body, and I get really tense and cold and then the physiological component is triggered. This happened on the NYC subway several months back, and I chewed a piece of ginger for some reason and it turned out to stop the panic attack, too. Now, I always keep a few pieces of the ginger with me in case I feel one coming on...that, and I begin counting down from 100 and taking deep breaths. I rarely have a "full on" one anymore!

I do not recall the exact portions as this has been 67 years ago. However she used the ground powdered ginger, honey and hot milk, and we drank it as hot as we could. It did not taste the greatest to a child but it sure took the cramps away. There were no such things as Midol and the other meds, which we need to stay away from and use the natural things that God put on earth in the first place. He has made our bodies that if we feed it the right foods, it will heal itself. I also do not use milk any more so I will try with Rice milk as I am working with an inflamation in my arm
