We purchased a new over the range microwave just before I learned that they were harmful. I now use it for extra storage.

I find that no one believes me when I say that microwaves damage food. It's very frustrating!

I used to do this all the time - before I gave my microwave away because the only thing I ever used it for was cleaning sponges.

You could also add a few drops of GSE, Grapefruit Seed Extract which is very powerful stuff. Just soak your sponge in a bowl full of water for a few minutes w/ the GSE. Great anti-bacterial and sanitizes boards, countertops, etc. Use as veggie wash and when travelling add a drop or more to clean tap water sources or third world country water if you do not have your own water handy.

I only use a sponge for scrapping food in prepration for the dishwasher (which is a good place to STORE the sponge as it will get washed each washing, be handy for loading and not infect the kitchen top) . I would NEVER think of using it for actual cleaning. Dish cloths are for cleaning; dishes, counters, etc. Dish cloths can ( and should) be washed in bleach and a clean one EACH day. Buy a stack. They are cheap!! The dishwasher is great for getting cheese and other sticky foods from the sponge before you microwave it. Think of it as 'double insurance'!!
