But sugar from corn, especially high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), is now more popular because it is much less expensive to produce. It also contains nearly twice the fructose

re: The Plague of High Fructose Corn Syrup in Processed Foods

The reason that HFCS and many other concentrated sweetener contribute so much to obesity is also because of the sit down society that we live in. When you take in large amounts of sugar, if your not active and doing something physical, meaning that your muscles are not really doing anything strenuous (sorry, typing doesn't count) then the body quickly and effectively converts the unused sugar into fat and stores it on the body.

This is why it's critical to get up and Move after any meal. If I have something that I know has more sugar in it or could create higher sugar concentrations in my body, such as grains for example, then I will not only move but I'll do a mini workout like some leg raises, a bike ride, push ups, crunches or all of them. Something to get the muscles working harder so that the sugar in the blood is quickly used up and doesn't get converted into fat in the body. Some kind of resistance exercise generally places a greater strain on the body and thus helps to greatly prevent excess weight gain.
