Oz we have jumping ants that kill more people each year than snakes. King Brown Snakes ,Tiger Snakes and 2 species of Taipans make this the poison snake capital of the world. The quoted inland Taipan is about 10 times more toxic than a Cobra also in the Elapid family along with the other snakes I quoted. &lt;p&gt;redback spiders hurt like hell and can kill and are in most homes and yards here.. brown snakes take out a few of us aussies every year too. they live in suburbia as well as rural areas.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;on the good side:-) we dont have rabies! or bears, pumas etc. hmm? &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;and a point, we use venom to make anti-venine, without it a lot more would die. so not all research is futile or dangerous..&lt;/p&gt;
