Bird Flu is as real as the Spanish Flu.

There are, however, two major differences:

1. Back then, there were no big pharmaceutical companies peddling $BILLIONs of mostly worthless antidotes.

2. BF is killing those that catch it at an alarming rate which has mosts scientists dumbfounded. As others reported, last year it had a 69% mortality rate. In this young year it is running at 82%. They had expected this thing to drop down to "normal" lethality rates as it mutated over time.

BF has been slowly mutating in relative obscurity. There are now strains circulating where Tamiflu is totally worthless (as opposed to mostly worthless.).

I haven't updated it since then but do not be lulled into complacency just because Dr. Mercola - who is not a virologist - says the it is/was a "Bird FLu Hoax." While many aspects were, and still are (like Tamiflu), BF is the Sword of Damocles hanging over the world.

Just because the MSM is more interested in Brittney Spears or Barak Obama does not mean it has gone away.

Bird Flu Virus has Mutated into Form That's Deadly to Humans

The avian flu has undergone a critical mutation making it easier for the virus to infect humans, according to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and published in the journal PLoS Pathogens.

"We have identified a specific change that could make bird flu grow in the upper respiratory tract of humans," lead researcher Yoshihiro Kawaoka said.

At least if it kills off 82% of the population, global warming will cease.

How many of your family members would die if it drops to "only" a 50% morality rate? Or is 25% acceptable?

To summarize the above, the death rate is as follows:

Year: cases / deaths / death rate

2003: 4 4 100%

2004: 46 32 70%

2005: 98 43 44%

2006: 115 79 69%

2007: 85 58 68%

Total: 348 cases / 216 deaths / 62% fatality rate

By comparison, the results of the initial outbreak period of SARS (November 2002 to July 2003, or about a year):,

SARS had totals of 8096 cases / 774 deaths / 9.6 fatality rate

And I'm sure that statistics on HIV, heart disease, the seasonal flu, and even auto crashes show them to be more deadly than SARS.

Since the bird flu deaths last year were still 20 times their starting number, it's not clear to me why the disease would be on it's way out, because a single lower year does not a trend make, but obviously there are worse infectious diseases out there. Bird flu is certainly over-prevalent in the news, considering it's comparative death rate.

In general, however, Airborne infectious diseases in general aren't threats that should be ignored, as the easy ability to spread and continual re-occurrance of the seasonal flu, and the similarities of the spanish flu outbreak to the bird flu shows us.

I think that governments trying to surpress such infectious diseases is one of the few things that governments -should- be useful for. Not the media, but the government, especially those where the outbreaks keep on occurring. Why the media has devoted so much focus to it, on the other hand, when there are more devastating issues, isn't clear.

This article drastically disappoints in the complete lack of outside references (hopefully the other articles on H5N1 are better about that), which is what compelled me to include the ones that I have here. In fact, all of the links in the article are self-referential, which only leads to an insular, closed-in point of view on a powerful issue.

I know that I am going to sound like a conspiracy nut, however . . . I think that this along with the ethanol thing is an excuse for the governments of the UN to depopulate 3rd world nations. They just went in and killed millions of birds that provide meat, and then they take away their grains for making ethanol, slowly starving them. There was even an article in the newspaper the other day about how ethanol and rising oil costs are starving poor countries. Combine the two and you have dead poor people, millions of them.

Dr Mercola comments: "It would be hard to make up a story as filled with greed and political corruption as this one.". Well it's not that hard really. All one has to do is look at the greed and political corruption surrounding the Climate Change debate. This is where experts who have a dissenting view are professionally eradicated for having a view that goes against the "consensus".

Having a scare campaign which teaches a baseless fear to our children for personal gain is nothing new at all.

I find it almost comical that the few posts here that make a stand against Dr. Mercola's comments get flamed out. Guess I know what to expect.

For those who are just jumping on Dr. M's bandwagon go check out www.flutrackers.com/forum . There is some truth regarding Avian Flu.

Now, is the threat greater than any other viral outbreak we may encounter? I really don't know. What I do know is that those who are prepared are the ones who survive. This holds true for natural disasters and winter survival as well. Yes, we have a survival kit in the cars and a "go pack" that contains what the family needs if we have to leave quick.

No matter the situation, take precautions and responsibility for yourself.

Dr. Mercola, I think very highly of your health info, read it every day and try to incorporate as much of it as I can into my life. However, in my opinion, you are wrong-wrong-wrong about the Avian flu being a hoax. It is in birds in many countries, has killed scores of children and adults and the possibility exists that it may become more able to infect humans. At that time it may become less virulent--that possibility may work in your favor. Granted, Tamiflu and hastily developed vaccinations are questionable at best but they are no reason to discourage people from staying informed about the possibility of Avian flu.

As far as I can see, the bird flu accomplished two things:

First, it lined the pockets of Rumsfeld and those who made the bogus Tamiflu

More importantly, it provided the government with a non bio-terrorism excuse to mandate mass inoculations of the public.

Not this member of the public, not ever no matter what the reason! The government's right to tell me what I must or must not do with my very private body ends where my skin begins.

Dr. Mercola has really missed the mark on this issue. Avian bird flu is real and it is infecting and/or killing people every day. Just google "bird flu" and set an alert that will e-mail you daily postings.Everybody thinks that since nothing dramatic has happen in the past two years that it is some kind of big pharm conspiracy. If H5Ni is contracted by someone with a common commutable flu virus, the two could mutate into a deadly commutable virus that could ravage the human race. The only defense is a very strong (healthy) immune system. Start taking probiotics and eating living foods that are full of living organisms. Avoid antibiotics and other presciption and non-presciption drugs that kill the benificial bacteria in your gut. You should do this regardless of the prospects of contractinf the flu; you will be amazed at how seldom you will get colds and be sick!!!

I had some sort of severe respiratory infection back when all of this was going on, and no doctor tested me for the bird flu. I almost died. I think the real hoax here is denying people who are seriously ill the test for these 'rare' infections - same way they deny chronic Lyme.

I snap my fingers to keep man eating tigers away. As you can see, it works very well...there are no man eating tigers in the entire 6 county area.

Likewise, the drug industry snapped it's fingers (after depositing the check) and wouldn't you know it, we were indeed able to keep the bird flu from striking millions.

Let's get the facts straight lest we appear as quacks as proponents of alternative medicine are so often labeled.1.Tamiflu is not a vaccine.It prevents the virus from entering cells thus preventing it's spread.2. The cases mentioned all occured in Japan though Tamiflu is now in widespred use.No detailed imfo was available concerning the cases as related to the drug.The same adverse neurological symptoms were reported in flu cases in children before the use of Tamiflu.Those of us who enjoy the benefits of alternative medicine are a minority at present.There is no doubt Tamiflu has saved the lives of elderly and young at risk groups who had no conventional treatment for flu until now.

I know that everyone in the military was vaccinated for the swine-flu during that hoax. Did they also vaccinate the military for the bird-flu? It just seems that given that both these hoaxes happened during war-time, a more sinister take on this could be that it is actually the first step towards bio-warfare. I remember learning about the swine-flu, and what a completely remote threat it actually was, and wondering about the possibility that our gov't could have had it as a back-up plan. Creapy to think about.
