Of the men monitored over 14 years, some 3,000 struggled with prostate cancer and about one in seven were suffering from the advanced

re: Flax Seed Oil Actually Increases Prostate Cancer While Fish Oil Decreases It

Unfortunately, the condition of the flax oil used in these tests is unknown. We are told that these molecules are highly reactive, need to be extracted from the seeds using cold-pressed gear, low-temperature methods, and then stored away from light and heat. One would wonder whether, in these tests, improper care has resulted in an oil that has become toxic through oxidization or being subjected to molecular damage from some combination of heat and exposure to other contaminating molecules.

In addition, Dr. Johanna Budwig teaches us that, the flaxoil's cancer fighting properties require intimate contact with sulfurated proteins, such as are found in 'quark' or cottage cheese.

Was this done in these tests? Maybe not. Perhaps the tests are invalid. See fat/oil expert, Dr Udo Erasmus. website. (Of course, he also sells flax oil products so is not entirely unbiased.)

Also, what happens when the flax seed is used for fibre and fish oil used for the omega-3 ??? will it mitigate the risk associated with flax seed?

I need to take large amounts of flax seed for IBS -- psyllium is just not affordable for me. And i tolerate flax seed very well.

I'm also interested in antioxidant capacity and lipid peroxides -- does the ALA get peroxidized and incorporated into the prostate causing a cascade of problems? If so, that would fit in with the old "if you increase your intake of unsaturated fats, there is an increased need for lipid-protective antioxidants" [and I add supplies to antioxidant systems, since selenium is not itself an antioxidant] and fits, e.g., the selenium and vitamin D recommendations in decreasing prostate cancer risks.

I'd rather it not be just pure ALA that's a risk, since I'd rather folks eat ALA-rich vegies and, if they must, ALA-rich meat and eggs, rather than the modern more omega-6-rich such.
