But I did know that I was out of pain and swelling after that root canal surgery. So what to do when I one is in pain? Deny it and yank the tooth out and shed $$$ for implants? . Now, my 8 yo child needs a pulpotomy (partial root canal) and I have no clue what to do. It's on a molar and she will have it for another 2-3 years. I have no where to look for a second opinion since the root canal spec who did my root canal would of course vote for the pulpotomy. So, what are the alternatives to the rootcanal? I am really stumped. Pull the tooth out and chew with what?

The problem with getting rid of Amalgam fillings has always been that there is still no effective, long-term substitute. Composite fillings only last on average of five years, versus 20+ years for Amalgam. Each time you replace the fillings you need to remove a little bit more of the tooth.

---unquote---

With full respect, this is such as BS. My first three amalagm fillings at the age of ten fell out within months. Another amalgam fillng I had broke in two and broke the tooth, too.

For an amalgam filling to sit tight, the dentist must remove a huge--and I mean huge--chunk of a perfectly helthy tooth tissue, because if they don't the amalgam will fall off (and possibly be swallowed). I learned it the hard way when another dentist tried to put an amalgam filling between two of my molars. He drilled and drilled until there was nothing left of the teeth. I got root canals in both of them and lost these two teeth subsequently (I got Titanium implants there now). With composite fillings, you can fill in as small a cavity as you physically can drill, so your argument about the dentist "needing" to remove "a little bit more" of the tooth wit composite is monumental BS. With Mercury fillings, you loose a far too big a chunk of the tooth immediately, not just on subsequent visits. And nothing can prevent an amalgam filling from breaking off.

But even if amalgams did last forever, look what happened to Michael G. Fox or Andy Grove (the Intel legend). Their amalgam fillings will outlast them. Is this what you want for yourself?

PS: Are you brain washed by the Mercury-is-healty-let's-get-more-of-it-lobby? Why do you spread BS around? Shame on you.
