I think Dr. Mercola can beOBNOXIOUS in his hard-sell presentation of all of his books, vitamins, etc.in part, to offset legal expenses from constantly being sued for addressing the issues he dares to address perhaps. Also his casual video style is a little on the quirky side, but harmless. However, I have found the content and most of what he has said thus far to be absolutely excellent and it agrees with much of what has WORKED for me, personally. I see major problems brewing on the horizon having to do with the repercussions of cell phone use. Dr. Mercola has been warning us about these things for years. Better pay attention because the things you worry about having to do with the acidity in your diet will pale compared to the effects of using cell phones!

Sugar causes an acidic ash to be produced in the body. Fresh citrus, especially lemons and limes, leave an alkaline ash once metablolized. Processed citrus that has been pateurized leaves an acidic ash after it has been fully metabolized. There are dissentious opinions regarding the ph ash created by many foods, but as a general rule of thumb, most seem to be in agreement that the majority of fresh fruits and especially veggies are alkaline forming, and most processed or refined foods create and acidic reaction in the body.

I find it disconcerting that this article makes what I feel are blatent mistakes. I've spent a lifetime studying this information, and I'm not above correction, but I do feel this information was presented in a confusing, erroneous manner. I rarely post, but felt the need to address this. Hopefully Dr M has the opportunity to re-read the above article and make the necessary changes before too many more are confused by it.

By now it is common knowledge that sugar, alcohol and caffeine are acid creating substances. As well I would add that a surer way of knowing ones metabolic type would be through blood typing. What we are talking about here must be based on this. I would, however like to express my appreciation for this sight in providing badly needed alternative information on such important issues as health.

Whilst I agree with the basic premise that there are different metabolic types, there is a lot of very misleading and harmful hearsay 'advice' in this article.

"A vegetarian diet or a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in protein and fat is good for you."

- Rubbish, lots of fruits and vegetables are never bad for you, whether you need lots of protein and fat or not.

"...what does make you fat is the inability to properly metabolize, or convert to energy, carbs, proteins, fats and calories. "

Incorrect - what makes you fat is eating more many calories than your body needs, especially in the form of simple carbohydrates. In the case of white bread, pasta and sugar, you dump sugar into your bloodstream which your body has to get rid of, or your blood thickens and you die. So your body releases insulin, which opens up the fat cells, which suck out the sugar from the blood and get bigger, making you fat. Then your blood sugar falls too *low*, and you get hungry again, so you overeat. Over time if you continue to do this, the system breaks and you get diabetes. It's really that simple. Whether you need high protein or high fat or high carbohydrates, always eat your carbs with lots of fiber, like in fruits and vegetables. Fat and protein don't have this effect, just carbs. Your body is designed to get carbs from whole foods, not refined foods. Eliminate processed foods from your diet, and your body will soon tell you what type it is by telling you what it craves.

Are we missing something in the chemistry here....I sure hope so because this puts Nutritional typing into question in my mind and that would be a shame as I have done two so far with Mercola.com.

That citrus though called acidic - actually causes an akaline reaction in your body - therefore is excellent for you - there is a reason why for decades people have drunk orange juice when they feel a cold coming on. After I had serious (for cancer) surgery - all I craved was fresh squeezed orange juice - tons of it and I refused any kind of solid food. My doctor was amazed at my recovery and 4 years later I am still cancer free.

Also the test he gives for Nutritional typing seems too vague - for instance it asks what is your typical breakfast is ( as if we all eat exactly what we most would LIKE to eat) I eat Grapenuts with Skim milk and raisins - because it's fast and easy and I don't have to cook anything. But that doesn't mean what I am not really craving is scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese and sausage. Then it asks about your typical lunch and dinner - it varies constantly - whether I am at a meeting or a restaurant or a friends house - there is no "typical" just what is available at the time. Sometimes I eat broiled fish and a salad ( 1 type) sometimes I eat prime rib and a baked potato with cheese and sour cream

( type 2) sometimes I eat just a salad ( type 3) sometimes I eat a lot of bread with butter ( type ?) and in all of those instances - it was good at the time. He presumes that our diets consist of what we really want to eat at every meal - not the practicality of a busy single person's life which consists frequently of just grabbing what is cheap or easy or available at the time. I don't think by answering what we usually eat will give us a true type because I think we mix it up for 101 reasons that don't necessarily have anything to do with what our real "type" is.

Having said that I do think there really is something to this typing thing - I just don't think his test will give an accurate reading of what your type might be ( for instance again - my sister has 2 young kids - she then eats whatever they eat!

Typically, the former are produced en masse and sold in major retail stores (e.g. supermarkets etc), the latter are made by small producers/farmers and are sold directly in small markets or local delis.

Think about it for a second. When you are doing your shopping, do you wonder about the food chain? do you ask yourself HOW that specific produce was grown (such as in the case of organics) or made (e.g. 'organic' ketch up)? If those organics have travelled a long way , it means that they have been produced (picked and stored and distributed) by the same means of production as regular non organic produce. Are those organic sprays or spreads really better than non organic sprays or spreads? obviously not, because their food chain is similar. So it's not about 'good' or 'bad' foods but rather 'good' or 'bad' food chains - i.e. good or bad methods of production. Have you ever wondered how the industry makes that bacon that is sold in supermarkets? Watch this

instead of worrying about alkaline etc - I just shop sensibly, and eat seasonal foods that can be supplied by my local farmer.
