I have switched to using olive oils, butter, and sunflower oil.

re: The Great Con-ola

Thank you so much for this article, it assures me that my distrust of Canola, right from the start, was not signs of paranoia in need of medication.

I would like to add that my experience at a Whole Foods that was opened here not too long ago, was a wide eyed one, when i saw that 99% of what they have on the shelves and in their salad bar contains soy and canola in some form. Actually, recently, after pointing out the dangers of soy and canola to any stockperson that i could find, i do see that the salad bar has more offerings with olive oil, and no soy, as well as soy is pointed out on some of them, as a caveat. Probably not due to my interference, as much as the proliferation of allergic reactions that have most likely occurred, and customers threatening to sue.

Don't forget to read you labels, even in health food stores. You really have to play detective, as more and more good companies are being bought up my mulitnationals who don't have the same commitment to your health, and are more often than not manipulating the ingredients to aid and benefit those whose focus is profit over health.

My main feeling about Whole Food now, is that it is the Wal-mart of heath food stores; and i fear their putting all the 'little guys', who are committed to health and healing, out of business. If they ever get to be the 'only game in town'.. could it get any worse for our health?

But have been following the Paleo Diet, for some time my wife (she is not diabetic) is on the same diet and we both have lost weight. There has always been a question in my mind and far as the use of canola oil. That it is a seed, and in the Paleo Diet it does express the absolute refrain from eating grains and seeds. I do not take any oral or insulin, yet I keep my sugar in check with this diet. I work out as much as possible to build muscle and keep my cardiovascular rate up there. As you can tell I want to guide us both in the right direction but it is of course hard, just to keep up with info. Is this in a way just reinforcing the view that all seeds and grains should be for the BIRDS. After all why do they add vitamins and fortify bread if it was so good for you in the first place.

www.epa.gov/.../tech_011332.htm

Pyrethrins are:

"A substance resembling, and isomeric with, ordinary camphor, and extracted from the essential oil of feverfew; -- called also Pyrethrum camphor."

And what is 'feverfew'?

"A perennial plant (Pyrethrum Parthenium, or Chrysanthemum Parthenium) allied to camomile, having finely divided leaves and white blossoms; -- so named from its supposed febrifugal qualities."

Febrifugal?

"Having the quality of mitigating or curing fever."

Pyrethrins all the sudden do not sound poisonous. The only thing left that could be even slightly toxic is Canola Oil itself.

You might also want to investigate the digestibility of Canola oil, and why it is that birdseed with 'canola' seeds kill birds.

I do however suggest it for lubricating hardware with - it works wonders there as it never spoils, just like any good industrial lubricant...
